Is Survivalist culture and end of days talk mainstream now?

Anyone who knows my history on this board, knows I am a conspiracy nut, and a radical. But whats interesting about the economic crisis is the mainstreaming of the alarmist doomsaying talk.
I have read multiple articles about normal average folks, non hippie's, non survivalists, starting to grow garden's and growing at least some of their food.
And I have also heard radio ads, talking about how the end is nigh and all that.
I have also heard that gun's are being bought in alarming amounts and rates.
I think even a few years ago, those who walked around in NY with sandwich boards that said "The End is Near", they would be laughed at or derided.
Anyone else concur on this point?
I think its a sign of the times, of how far we seem to have fallen, how ridiculous these times are. Mainstream news anchors talk about the current crisis as being equivilant to the Great Depression.
The gun buying I am not a fan of, but I think the growing of food is a good thing. I have long argued, and contunue to argue, the way we live is not sustainable. Anyone who thinks we can continue our current way of life is on drugs.
Things have to change. But it remains to be seen if people are really willing to change. I have yet to hear a CNBC anchor argue that the market collapse and current Depression is a result of capitalism, militarism and militarism or civilization. But the fact remains thats why it collapsed...

I cant think of a more stark fact to present than that.
The WTO is the epitome of the greed of the world, of America of capitalism and civilization. And when even those in charge of it are suggesting we go and start some commune, you know things have changed.
good point in the op...all of these mouthpieces for end of times scenarios are failing to mention what got us into this mess...namely GREED.
