Flag Football: Unflagging Success
Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Bill Massey's flag football fever is spreading to high schools across the country and even getting a big-time handoff from the NFL.

Massey, Boca Raton's athletic director, was a key figure in kicking off the sport at Florida schools 11 years ago. Since then, participation has grown from 40 schools to 158, including 24 in Palm Beach County.
"It's grown every year since we began," said Massey, a former boys football coach at Spanish River. "It's a great activity for girls."

The NFL, which is encouraging schools nationwide to offer flag football as a varsity sport, agrees. This year, the league paid for equipment and training manuals for every school that launched a pilot program.

It's on the rise down here in South Florida. I can remember winning a championship back in college and that was some great fun. I disliked offense but loved playing cornerback...as the saying goes defense wins championships.

I played in a league with work folks ... it was a lot of fun ... but, as beginners (and many of my co-workers from Europe and not really familiar with American football), we asked to be put in the lower division, and we were ... our first game, we went up against a team that had a laminated playbook they would bring on the field and into the huddle with all their plays. a LAMINTED FUCKING PLAYBOOK and they were playing in the lower experience division? Pricks.

They beat us 49-7 or something like that ... by the end of the game, we were accidentally tripping opponents, elbowing them, etc ... one of our girls flat out kneed a guy in the nuts (while we told her that was not cool, we couldn't help but laugh). It was fun to see them get pissed when we finally scored.

The rest of the league was super cool, pretty similar to us, after the games teams would stick around and share beers together ... but this one team felt the need to go into the lower division and go undefeated .... they probably had small penises (even the girls).

Haha...I played in grad school with a bunch of former collegiate athletes, which were mishmashed into a semi-ridiculously good team but also kind of bad because we all only had specific talents. For instance I pitched at my D3 college so they made me QB. The thing was I had a great accurate arm but wasn't good at dodging the rush, we had a former D3 corner who was our best WR and CB, a former D3 running back who was essentially useless in flag football, same for our former D3 LB, a D1 soccer player was the #2 WR but he was like 5'5". It was hilarious we'd like 'out athlete' some teams but others that came with those damn laminated playbooks kicked our ass. HAHA!

Played way back in college....1984....was the only one on the team who could shot gun snap to the QB, thus I ended up at center....weighed about 145 lbs. soaking wet then. We went undefeated, but lost the championship game in which I did not get to play....three of us had a final exam that conflicted.

Man . . . I remember playing flag football in gym class. The only reason that we played flag rather than regular football was so that we girls didn't get totally smashed while trying to learn the game. It was a lot of fun though.
  • yep, i play it right now in college. well not right now, but in the fall when it's offered through intramurals. We had a good team of mostly former high school players, so we ended up going undefeated until the championship, which we lost. We played a couple of those teams who took everything absurdly seriously, they were definitely the most fun to beat. The one team's captain got kicked out of the game for arguing with the ref because he wasn't calling offensive pass interference on me and one of my teammates because we could jump higher than all their DB's.
