NEW YORK (CNN) -- Legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden is retiring, he announced Thursday.

"It's been such a great ride ... the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion -- it still is," he said in a statement released by NBC Sports.

Madden, 73, was a Hall of Fame coach for the Oakland Raiders, but is best known to millions as an ebullient football commentator.

He won 16 Emmy awards for outstanding sports analyst/personality, NBC said.

I wonder if Harry Kalas's death had something to do with it. They were the same age and Kalas had a much more vigorous schedule (doing baseball, NFL Films and NFL games) but it's hard to be on the road so much at that age.

Now here's a guy who, when he retires, won't be coming to work anymore.

Summeral and Madden were a dream team. Happy Trails in retirement, John

Well, that's not true. There are some horrible color guys in football. That said, I never liked Madden.
Between his incoherent babbling, his incomplete sentences, his made up words, and his gay love affair for Brett Favre I'm glad he's leaving.

That said, does anyone else think it's a coincidence that Madden is retiring the same year Brett Favre decided to quit?
    Hmmmm...

I tired of Madden after his first couple of years. I like the guy as a person but just not his commentary of games. Circling hot dog wrappers being blown by the wind every game kinda got old, just sayin'.

    Well actually no...I didn't.

I don't watch or listen to Jim Rome and as a matter of fact I've said pretty much the same thing about Madden on these boards for years.

Well excuse me....I will be sure to get the transcript of every post you've ever made...

I just thought it was funny that you posted that 2 seconds after Rome said the same thing. You should listen to Rome....He rips the Cubs for choking all the time.

I actually saw it on CNN.com right after I was on here.

    But anyways...

Nah, I can't stand Jim Rome. Not for the fact that he rips on the Cubs...I've been dealing with that my entire life as a Cubs fan. hahaha! I can't stand him because he's flat out a dickhead.

Yeah It takes a cynical personality....I think if you give it a week it might grow on you.

Back to John Madden....I think you either love him or hate him. You have to admit that he has been a partof your football experience for a long long time...

For as many years as I've hated hearing Madden broadcast games, it will be kinda weird to NOT hear him from time to time.

That said, I'm almost certain that Madden will still be involved in football in come capacity. He may not be doing the weekly broadcast, but you know one of the networks will try to talk him in to doing commentary or something.
