heard it on gremmie but never "listened"...and some people think this band didn't start off political!!:lol:

shit has Orwellian inspiration all over it and it's even more appropriate now than when he/they wrote it!

thats one of my favorite songs. I like the original version with vocals better than the one on the redux tho.

Are the vocals on the redux newly recorded? Or are they old vocals that weren't used on the original?

im pretty sure they are old vocals not used on the orignal.
Also, the redux one left out some vocals like in the beginning when ed says "you should be happy with what we give you" and then some other lyrics. and it leaves out at the end w hen he screams "brother!"
New version just aint as intense it doesnt do it for me.

And at the end of the original, Ed says something along the lines of "I'll just go home, turn on the nightly news, drink a beer. What difference can I make anyway"

    Ive always loved that

there are 3 recorded versions of brother, 1 is the original where ed does that rant at the end about watching the nightly news, drinking a beer etc, there is another old version which doesn't have him saying that, and has him a bit angrier on vocals and mike better on the guitar, and the third redux version which is good but seems a bit 'softer'

song gives me goosebumps that's how f'ing good!

the other day I played it for my brother-in-law (who usually puts down PJ..this coming from a Motley Crue fan), and he's like oh man that's good, who's that? I started laughing and told him it was PJ. he was taken back. then I told him the reason he probably likes it is it's from Ten era. he said "oh I used to have Ten, yeah I remember that song."

I played it for my brother, but told him it was new PJ. He was impressed and asked why dont they play like that more often.

I enjoy the second version of the leaked series.

One of my favorite songs (Check out my marker or whatever ist called).

If Im listing to it with headphones I get goosebumps. Need better headphones!

edit--guess they got rid of the marker?

  • I personally LOVE the version with the Vedder nightly news rant the best. I think the Redux version is ok. I just wished they released the rant version. I think I only listened to the instrumental once. :(

I'll have to go back to the early version and check out the differences..been a while since I heard that one!

Anyone else hearing this all over their radio? Quite a few Philly stations had it on rotation last month, but it's starting to fade out now :(

The new release version blows. The one we all know about before hand is a mind blowingly good song.

Yea, I still hear it a few times in western Massachusetts. But it is definitely fading.

I wish they released the original version. It did hit number one though. But that isnt too hard to do with the music out there now.

IMO, starting with Who You Are, they have released a couple bad singles. Who You Are and Nothing As It Seems were terrible choices for an album's first release & impression. They are not bad songs, but I believe they were not radio friendly and never gave the album momentum to get any kinda commercial success they could have had. Some say they did this on purpose. That may be true, but if you werent a Pearl Jam fan or if you were just a casual fan when those songs were released, there was a good chance you didnt give those albums a chance (sucks for those people).

Im sure some people will say I am wrong, but I obviously know this is not true for everybody. It is simply my opinion. I just feel strong about this because I wish they didnt do this. Especially when I hear idiots say, "Pearl Jam, I didint know they made another album after Vitalogy." Also, this may be a reason why you do not hear fucking shit on the radio except for songs from, you guessed it, Ten, VS & Vitalogy.

Pearl Jam has SO MANY great songs that they deserve their OWN FM radio station, like AOL Radio.

for some reason Brother (the rereleased version) makes me sad.

The original version also has harmony vocals on the choruses. The new version just has Ed alone. Why couldn't they leave well enough alone?

Excellent question. The same question I asked with the Lost Dogs versions of Wash, DF, Alone, and Brother.
