A cool article about bootlegs featuring "We're Gonna Hungry"

Since unofficial bootlegs are on people's minds lately, here's an article that specifically mentions PJ in a write-up about foreign boots.

This is from a tech blog I frequent. The author reminisces about bootlegs in general and moving on to tape trading. Best is the pic that accompanis the article. It's the cover of "We're Gonna Hungry". I still have this one. It has the unplugged performance and a few other live tracks such as "Drop the Leaves."

That's a neat little article. We're clearly not the only ones bitten by the thrill of finding an off limits show and coveting it.

Seriously. One of my all-time favorite shows is still Berlin 1996. I forget the exact date, but the boot is called "The Wall". It also has one of the best Eddie one-liners (thats just as good as "shoes for my friends") when he says, "I am a doughnut" right before Who You Are (in ref. to the urban legend about Kennedy's famous speech for the youngins in the crowd).

Those were the day's! Here's what I own on the Silver Pearl Jam Unofficial Bootlegs! (Silver CD's > EAC > MP3's). Also backed up up using (Silver CD's > EAC > SHN's). :)

I bought tons & tons of them here at Taz Records. A local record shop here in Halifax! Single CD's were $35 bucks. Double CD's were $60 bucks. I had to collect them all. This was all before '98 (when I got my first PC w/ Internet access).

Wow! That's an impressive collection! I think everyone had a copy of the Five Musketeers disc at some point :) I really miss living close to a good independent record store. Come to think of it I really miss record stores.

I've always seen Five Musketeer's for purchase, but never went for it! Must of been cause I had a Maxell tape given to me, that I would just buy the CD's that I didn't own on recordable cassette tapes. :? lol

I would trade tons of CD's I bought through Columbia House for a few of those bootlegs. Many Nirvana, Foo Fighter's, Metallica bootlegs. I loved 'em. Drooled over those bootlegged pressed Neil Young & Metallica vinyl imports. Each week asking the store owner "And new Pearl Jam Bootleg's? Shirt's? Stickers?" The reply, "Nothing yet D! Now turn down those headphones!" lol.

Now that's a really good idea. I can't believe I didn't think of it. I did the math at the time and remember the cost per cd being something like $5.25 when you ordered through Columbia House of BMG Music Club. There would have definitely been some trading-up going on!

Those WERE the days weren't they, D?!?

Hated those prices though!! Didn't stop me from buying probably about 20 of 'em from my local record store.

I remember the old dude that ran the place thought i was crazy for paying $60 for a double disc..

Sweet collection, by the way

I still got this old bootleg. I remember after the Atlanta '94 show that was broadcast on the radio, I was on a quest to find a CD bootleg of that show. I didn't even know European CD bootlegs even existed but I knew someone somewhere had to have made this show into a CD considering how available it was broadcast free on the radio and, moreover, how incredible the show was. A friend of mine located a copy at Criminal Records in the Atlanta neighborhood of Little Five Points. I called and had them set aside a copy and drove down immediately. I was shaking with excitement. It was $50-60, but I didn't care -- I'd have paid double that even on my meager high school budget. So I'm about to pay and say to the guy behind the counter, "This is so awesome. Do you guys have any other CDs like this?" With total nonchalance he says, "Oh yeah" and reaches under the counter and pulls up a whole big BOX of other Pearl Jam bootlegs! :o  :D:mrgreen:8-) I felt like I had reached nirvana! More excited, I scan all the titles and tracklistings and pick out a few others to purchase including the aforementioned We're Gonna Hungry. Those old bootlegs opened up a whole new world to me and shifted my PJ fanaticism into 6th gear. In total, I ended up with 40-50 over the next couple of years which was an expensive habit for a poor college kid. I still have most of these and treasure them -- especially that Atlanta boot the was the catalyst.

That's awesome man! That's exactly what it felt like discovering those first the first time. Great story :D

I remember that one. eV was saying "Harvey Leeds. Harvey Leeds. Get outta my fucking face." Hilarious. He also name-checked Michael Goldstone in that show.
