Whatever your opinion on their genre, or Darius Ruckers reinvention as a country singer, there is no question Cracked Rear View is a brilliant record. Wasnt it one of the biggest selling albums of all time? Unreal sense of melody and harmonies. Great tunes. Not the greatest song writers ever, or best band ever by any means. But that album is one of the best of the 90's, no doubt about it

  • you know what? we're gonna catch shit for it here, but you are 100% right. i don't know how anyone could put on that record and not be instantly sucked in by the sweetness that is "hannah jane." beautiful song, beautiful record. and a lot of their other stuff ain't half bad either.
  • Not Even the Trees is one of my favorite songs

it is a brilliant album. no giving shit here. My parents used to play it all the time when I lived with them.
"Let her cry" and "I'm going home" are my two favorite tracks.

I think you are right. I think it did go gold and was certified platnum maybe even a few times. Regarless it was one of the top selling records on the charts in 94 or 95.

I don't know if I've ever listened to that whole album, but their greatest hits disc is fucking stellar. Take the hits from that album, add the 2-3 radio singles from the next few and a cover of 'Hey hey what can I do'... you've got a winner!

Surprisingly positive thread so far, and I am going with the flow. This was one of my favorite albums growing up, and I always made my dad put it on. All the tunes are really catchy and its certainly some great pop rock.
Let Her Cry and Only Wanna Be With You are my favorites.

OK..I'll be the first to say that Hootie and the Blowfish certainly did suck!! Talk about college frat and sorority lets get drunk and think we're cool music.....makes me want to puke all over anyone who thinks it's good music. I think that's why I never really gave DMB a chance....same lame ass over priviliged college kids jumped on the same bandwagon. They basically took over for Hootie and the Blowfish once they fell off....seemed awfly commercial to me.

I remember going into Bar None in 5 points in columbia and seeing Darius in there at the bar at about 3am just hanging out.

I drank with him once or twice and everyone i ran into that had stories about him were all positive. I saw them play and they had some catchy tunes but just not my thing, but the guy seemed like a cool dude so more power to him for making some cash and enjoying life.

Music is not art to everyone and if you can make a living from it and not have a holier then though attitude about it good for them!

I'll jump on the bandwagon too! I loved that record. I saw Darius sing the National Anthem at an Astros game a couple of years ago. The man can sing. I really paid that much attention to his voice but it's really great.

I'll chime in and agree that I loved that album growing up. It might have been my first CD. And surprisingly, I'm only half ashamed.

How funny. I just listened to Cracked Rear View recently for the first time in a long time. For some reason, I just got the urge. It really is an underrated album. I second the comment about "Not Even the Trees." Beautiful, beautiful song. "Time" and "Goodbye" too.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.

I was driven away from them by the ridiculous over-playing that that first album got.... but it was a great album. I always thought that Goodbye was an incredibly beautiful song.

I think what added to their appeal is that they didn't take themselves too serious. They seemed to have fun with the whole ride that they were on.

I'm sorry but...Hootie and The Blowfish suck GIANT balls!!!

    Nothing but Yuppie Potpourri Fluff.

Hootie has never been anything more than a 3rd tier bar band at best.
They crawl amoungst the very lowest bottom feeders of the music industry.

There is no logical reason how 15 million people could collectivly have such an utter lapse of judgement and purchase the vile swill of Hootie's albums.

You and everyone that bought this shit shall never be forgiven for unleashing this horrible disgraceful excuse of a band upon the world.

Thankfully Time has rightfully beaten this band into submission. Thanfully Hootie and the Blowfish are back where they belong...hacking it out in any line dancing, pisstank, dive bar that will give them a stage to further disgrace themselves.

They are the soundtrack for redneck waterheads to slow dance and grind it with redneck cougars.

The Gene-Pool is forever tainted because of it.

God help anyone that considers this shit good Rock'n'Roll.

Remember that horrific episode of Friends where Ross, Rachel and the gang all went to a Hootie and The Blowfish concert? God-damn that was embarassing!!!

And before you bring up that whole Friends and Yellow Ledbetter thing....

Let me be the first to comment that it was utterly disgusting and disgraceful. One of the only times I ever remember cringing at hearing a Pearl Jam song...

Pearl Jam should have never let those chumps on Friends use "Yellow Ledbetter".

Those fucks completly ruined the song for me...

Maybe Stone plays Tennis with David Shwimmer or something.

Either way...It was totally un-called for.

Sorry to rain on your Hootie love folks...But C'mon!!!

I think all of their records were really good. Musical Chairs was a great record.
