Sad day for EVERY one ...

Kalas was a VERY familiar voice to all those that watched NFL Films ...

and example so you know who he is ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofL-0BYALS8

and for non-sports/non Superbowl folks ... he also narated the Puppy Bowls ....

Well if you believe in these things, he and Whitey are together again.

I was devastated when Whitey died, now Harry. So sad.

Very sad day in Phils history for sure.

6,000 plus games called for the Phillies . Since 1971. He was like a member of the family for over thirty seven years. He and Whitey together again...Gotta smile at that thought. After the disappointment of not being able to call the 1980 series, I'm really glad he finally got to call the 08 championship ! RIP HARRY !!!!!!!!!!

    gives me chills every time!

they keep playing soundbites on mmr between commercials.

i'm at work, not watching the game, but they said victorino pointed up to the broadcasting booth when he hit the homer.

    This was a nice read:

I imagine I have been to a baseball game where I cared less but, sitting here in Nationals Park less than 2 hours after Harry Kalas died here, I cannot remember one.

I am sure I have seen more heartbroken people, but I will never forget Larry Andersen, standing there, crying, recalling the time in 1993 when Kalas stood in the Phillies' victorious clubhouse and sang "High Hopes," and how Andersen said he wasn't sure he ever wants to hear the song again.

I know I have seen people deal with grim public duty before, but the ashen face of Phillies president David Montgomery -- when he told a knot of reporters in a Nationals Park hallway that Kalas had died -- was indelible. And when Montgomery said, simply, "We lost our voice," the rest was superfluous.

I know that life goes on, and that Harry would be the first on to tell you that, but they would not have played this game under the same circumstances if we had been in Philadelphia -- not because it is disrespectful, because it isn't, but because, well, I cannot imagine the public grief in Citizens Bank Park.

I imagine I have been to a baseball game where I cared less but, sitting here in Nationals Park less than 2 hours after Harry Kalas died, I cannot remember one.

I don't come around here much anymore...but thought I'd just say hello to the Philly peoples...It's fitting it's raining out. I think we all can feel for each other and what we're experiencing together. The guy was pretty much a part of our families. From the time I was a baby until this past summer, being on the beach down the shore will never be the same - let alone listening/watching any game for that matter. There was nothing better than listening to the Phils on the beach of North Wildwood with a mini cooler packed with High Life bottles resting next to my chair and a radio on the other side. Just shooting the shit with my buddies until we ran out of shit to talk about and then letting Harry take over, which inevitably ended with his somber tone usually rocking me to sleep in my chair looking at the ocean. Good times.

Today's been exponentially worse than I thought it would have been. Going to sleep to Comcast running non-stop reels and waking up to Mike & Mike coming on my clock radio talking for a good 45 minutes about the man. It's good to notice the appreciation he's getting the entire country over. David Montgomery was dead on by saying "we lost our voice."

Anyone catch the special Channel 12 ran last night at 7:30 about Harry. I didn't get to post it because I only had time to set my dvr before going bowling but it was great.

It was crazy to learn during the special that the only reason that Kalas was hired was because the Phils got a new sponsor at the Vet - Schmidt's beer and demanded that the pitchman for the prior beer (Ballantine's) that sponsored the Phillies - Bill Campbell - be replaced.

No I didn't see that Channel 12 Special but I remember years ago seeing a biography of Harry on something. It might have been something associated with the Tim McCarver show, I can't remember, but that's basically where I learned Harry's history of staring in Hawaii, going to Houston and coming here to Philly.

This is just so hard to fatham, Harry not calling games anymore.

And the fact that he called every single home run hit by Mike Schmidt is a feat in itself. That's fucking amazing.

It is fitting that it is a rainy dreary day here in Philly as the entire city is in mourning. It's unbeliveable how much one game can bring so much joy in October and then just blow you away wtih sadness 6 short months later.

But I did enjoy his article about Harry today.
