CIA to close "all" secret prisons

Someone here mentioned that Obama was closing Gitmo, and someone else (me probably) said they can just ship them off to any number of other secret prisons around the world.

maybe not.

according to this http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/10/world ... in.html?hp that won't be possible. they claim all secret prisons are being shut down.

But this is from CIA, who brought us such wonderful programs as the Iran/Contra affair and the bay of pigs invasion. hard to say if there is any truth to this.

One thing stands out, to me anyway. These prisons actually are secret. No one knows where they are. A few of the rendition victims during the Bush years said they were shipped to Afghanistan and Poland. But the exact locations really were secret. the CIA could have went right along torturing and murdering away and no one would have known. to even mention them now gives the story some credibility.

I disagree with a lot of what Obama has done so far, but this not one of them.

Regardless of whether or not they do close them, the fact that they "want" to is far better than advocating them as a means to protect your country. I have never been an Obama supporter because of his support for Israel yet I can still see he has done some good.

Yeah. i'm not in the "Obama is messiah" camp that the entire mainstream media in the US belongs too for some reason, but i voted for him. Howard Zinn put it well...to paraphrase 'small changes in policy from washington can mean life or death for many people'. that is actually the main reason why i voted for obama. i didn't expect fundamental change, i don't think that's possible with a vote...still, small changes in policy can mean life or death for some. the stakes were too high this last election. this is 1 example of that.

i wish we could choose on election day between supporting israel or not, but that just isn't the case. we get the little things like this.

i don't think we can change any of the rest with a ballot.
