They are by far the best retro band i've heard. Been jamming their shit for a few years now. I was put off at first at the closeness to sabbath, but I'm over that. I like them for what they are.

gods of earth is an awesome album but i still think iron swan from age of winters is their best song.

You came to the Toon! :D

Didn't see them with Metallica - not a huge fan. Have seen the Sword a number of times now since they toured for their first album - its always a treat!

I have been on the Metallica forum a lot and people really didn't like them but i thought they were awesome, another great underground stoner band. I guess they wern't thrashy and metally and retarded enough for ignorant metallica/machinehead/metal fans to understand them.

Some top riffs, grooves and solos too, had to get myself a shirt to support them, their first album is fucking awesome and i would have got the second but i think its a bit sucky.

    Really?
Damn i actually like the second one more then the first. The black sea into the white ocean is a great jam to end that album!

I only listened to it once so i probably missed a bunch of stuff out. I get the impression its less stoner than the first but i'll give it another go.

I thought the first one borrowed a little too much from sabbath. I still liked it, but on the second one even though the influence is still strong i felt they started to spice up their own sound a little and i really dug that.

My buddy was talkin about these guys the other day and this is probably more directed at him, but..........

Why can't bands just do their own thing? These guys are just aping Sabbath and it's sad.

I keep hearing about all these old school sounding bands, I go listen to them and it's just about the most boring thing to me.

I suppose, if Sabbath happens to be the favorite band of members of The Sword, it happens, but most of this throwback rock just seems to be really weak and uninspired.

The inner die-hard Sabbath fan is what makes me really enjoy these guys I think. Saw them support Metallica as well, and I too was impressed. I really enjoyed Down too.

the sword is amazing. check out their website and read their band info page if you get a chance. it's hilarious.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

In the grand scheme of things, originality is overrated. A great song is a great song, and the albums by The Sword are full of them. Would I want to hear them every day? No. But their albums are full of great songs. If I were going to march off to war, I'd want The Sword playing as the soundtrack (especially The Sundering).

    Says the Kiss fan.

I agree, a great song is a great song, but something that is pretty well copied straight from another band isn't that great.

I don't kid you one bit - as soon as I hit "send" I knew that would be the first response. I also love how context was removed.

Don't know much Sabbath - really not a fan of Ozzy's voice. They rock hard though and are great live!

they were the first band I saw at Bonnaroo last year and I was blown away. Really energetic, sweet grooves, and above all else....RIFFS!!! To say they're just a throwback to sabbath is crazy. They emmulate they don't immitate.

    sweeeet....
theyre on the lineup for an outdoor show near my home soon, (again) supporting Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, and Thin Lizzy (whats left of it).

i hadnt even bothered to look into music by these guys as i assumed they'd be a "metal" band. theyre much more than that. good songs ahead of finding another new genre in metal - thats a rare thing in new metal bands. im delighted with this find, cheers guys & gals. here's to groovy metal bands.

how many times can you say metal in one post?

Ditto. and to be fair to them, Metallica play here every year, when many bands of their stature would skip us. Last year the only support was Tenacious D....and this time its a substantial day of music lined up. :D

Had 'Age of Winters' for some time now... Absolutely brilliant.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

Wow, This is incredibly insulting. I love your implication that someone who doesn't like something that you like doesn't understand your unbelievably sophisticated musical palate. May I and other people who don't really like the Sword be born again through your divine grace.

Not that this is a "I heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy" post...

A friends band (Woodgrain) went on before them in Austin a few months ago... he said they were super rockin' live and were good people so take that for what its worth... also mentioned that they are different from a "metal" band, maybe a new metal feel... which is cool to me.
