Who would notice?

I've been talking to my friend for a bit now... his roommate has been missing for a month. They aren't close - but obviously he's concerned. She doesn't take his calls but will sporadically text back - all lies. "My dad died." "I'll be home this week." "Yes, I know the police are looking for me." She hasn't talked to her mother either.

I asked him - have you talked to her friends? Have they talked to her? If not, are they concerned? Have you talked to her boyfriend?

His response, "no one really noticed...and her boyfriends phone is disconnected" He talked to the dean - she hasn't been in class for a month.

He figures that either she took too much acid and had a mental breakdown somewhere or that "something bad" happened to her... and her boyfriend has her phone. She's been known to disappear for a while - but never this long.

Point of the story is - this brings up my deepest, darkest fear... that no one would notice if I disappeared. I mean, I've been known not to come back to my own home some nights... so no one would find it out of the ordinary.. and I sometimes don't answer my phone because I'm working, volunteering, or in the library.. I go for days without seeing my roommates because of our different schedules...

How long it would take for someone to notice if you were gone? Who would it be? I guess these are pretty rhetorical... but I'm just musing.

PS: RIP Layne...

that's a good question, and kind of a scary one to think about at the same time. and cell phones probably increase the time it would take for someone to notice too, i mean only you are getting messages and missed calls. Someone else you live with hearing your messages and missed calls might worry them sooner.

although then again I'm sure you would be surprised at how often people think of you, I don't know.

But yeah, it's sad to think of someone like Layne being gone for so long.

I was overseas for 3 weeks and nobody called my phone. I figure I could give Layne Staley a run for his money.

That sounds so scary to me. I can't imagine being missing for even one day without anyone not noticing or even caring.

    Wish you were here...

  • Not long.

Not because i'm vain or egotistical but for several reasons - I live with my boyfriend who picks me up from work everyday, we also text each other like there's no tomorrow. I'm close friends with the people I work with (the woman who sits next to me is like a second Mum), I call my parents every couple of days and I'm constantly with different friends or relatives... I should think that someone would notice pretty quickly if I wasn't about...
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

of course WE would miss you.
seriously, it seems as if you have alot of people expecting you to be certain places at certain times such as in class or volunteering obligations
so if you didnt show up they'd notice pretty quickly

    as for me...
    if I were missing
someone would notice within 5 minutes (maybe not that fast but pretty damn fast)
and i'm not arrogant, i've just got THAT much going on and so many people (family, students, friends, etc) depend on me to be where i'm supposed to be at any given time doing what i'm scheduled to do.
my mother, even at my age, freaks out if i'm late getting home from work and i don't call her to let her know i'm running late.

Probably within a few minutes when my Wife would be wondering why I wasn't home from work yet at my normal time

Once you're Married you can't go missing for very long

Well she'd have to act that way, she wouldn't want anyone to realize she knows where the body's hidden ;)

I have a live-in bf, kids, grandkids, sisters, yet....yes I could go missing for quite some time before any of these buffoons realize it. They would all assume my bf would tell them if I was gone, but Mr. Bufoon would assume I was in hospital, which I have to go to often, and let it go. He doesn't visit when I have to go and I don't call.
He may also think I left him, without realizing all my stufff is there!
He has a B.A. in Arts/ Sociology! ROFLMFAO!
He might not even notice at all until someone ask him where I'm at.
