Heading to San Francisco...

We are planning a summer vacation in San Francisco again. My daughter was about 6 the last time we went and she wants to go back now that she is a little older (13). My son is now 17, so he can remember most of what we did quite well. We are planning to actually get onto Alcatraz instead of cruising around it and also want to see the re-built Academy of Science. We toured it the last year it was open and loved it.

Besides a Giants game and a walk through Haight Ashbury, what else do you recommend? I dont neccesarily do the tourist only areas, but I dont want to get in over my head either.

Is the Mint worth the time?
Are there any beaches worth combing? Been to Judah area (by accident).

Any help?

I've only been to San Fran once, and that was for the '06 shows. My friend and I did come across this though

It was really cool, and a bunch of cliffs and also a walking trail http://sanfrancisco.about.com/od/enviro ... dtrail.htm

You can get some pretty sweet pictures of the Golden Gate if you want along the path as well.

I went there for spring break last year and drove down the coast to LA. It was sweet.

I was partial to Muir Woods. It's a partial redwood/conifer forest and very scenic. I love that shit. Alcatraz was a pretty cool tour, the teens should dig it. Make sure they watch the Rock before you go, hehe.

as cheesy as it is, you guys should take time to ride one of the cable cars! my sister lives there so i visit all the time, but even as i try to act like a local, sometimes i can't help it, i'll hop on one of the cable cars and go for a spin. its fun! :P

If you get the chance to get out for night sans kids - head to http://www.toronado.com/ - best beer bar ever. Great atmosphere, great bartenders, great beer! If I ever get back out there it's the first place I'd head to!

    Golden Gate Park is gorgeous.
Also see if you can tour the Ghirardelli chocolate factory. It's pretty amazing.
And drink some Anchor Steam while you're there! :D

I went on vacation 2 years back and loved it. Alcatraz is a trip, so is a Giants game, and the Amoeba Records in H.A. or the Rasputin records nearish Union Square. I'd also reccomend renting bikes to go over the bridge and down to Muir Woods or Solsolito. SF might be one of my favorite American cities. I'd go back there in an instant.

If you are going to be there on August 28th, you can see Pearl Jam at the Outside Lands Festival.

Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge...it's a free thrill...

I find the Ghiradelli Chocoate Factory to be lame. It's always so crowded and the chocolate costs more than pretty much anywhere else...the square is interesting in that there is a very expensive dog accessory store (only for small and tiny dogs)...and one of the best cupcake places ever. There's a nice view from there...

Pier 39 is pretty cool to walk around and people watch...and you can view a hundred or so sea lions....Fisherman's Wharf is neat with all the crabs and people yelling at you to buy them!

Coit Tower is interesting in that you get a great overview of the bay and the contra costa area - the Bay Bridge and the new Bay Bridge....We also took the exit to Treasure Island and got a fantastic view looking back at downtown San Fran! It was really cool!
