I could be wrong but wasnt his day of death a guesstimate? I could be completely wrong but I thought they found Layne days or even weeks after his presumed death?
  • No, you are not wrong, but it is considered a good 'scientific' guess

Yah same with Cobain it was a guess of the death date. So no one knows if thats the true date or not.

I believe he was found on the 20th. Since the Pearl Jam hidden song on Lost Dogs about Layne is called 4/20/02.

I read on Wikipedia that at the time of his death, Layne weighed 86 lbs. He was 6'1". So, so so so sad.

Yep, I remember feeling very very sad about his death when it happened, mostly because no one found him for so long. So terrible that someone like Layne Staley could be dead for two weeks before anyone even noticed he wasn't around. Still bothers me to think about it.

As far as I know, heroin was the biggie.

Here's the wiki excerpt about his death..

On April 19, 2002, an unidentified person placed a call with 911 to say "She hadn't heard from… [Staley] in about two weeks."[19] Staley was found dead in his home after, "his mother and stepfather went to his condo with the police."[20] As reported by Rick Anderson of the Seattle Weekly, his body was surrounded by various drug possessions and paraphernalia: "When police kicked in the door to Layne Staley's University District apartment on April 20, there, on a couch, lit by a flickering TV, next to several spray-paint cans on the floor, not far from a small stash of cocaine, near two crack pipes on the coffee table, reposed the remains of the rock musician." The article also stated that the 6'1" Staley weighed just 86 pounds when his body was discovered.[21] The autopsy report later concluded that Staley died after injecting a mixture of heroin and cocaine known as a "speedball". The King County Coroner's Office estimated Staley to have died on April 5, 2002, exactly 8 years after fellow grunge musician Kurt Cobain also died (Cobain was found three days later, on April 8). Staley's body was not discovered until two weeks later.

Yeah. During the last line when Kurt takes a breath and opens his eyes is so fucking haunting. I hate it that he's dead and that Layne is dead...and Shannon Hoon....that the intensity of their music carried over into their lives..and that they never felt high enough to be content. A fucking shame indeed.

If I knew where it was I would take you there. There's much more than this

Not to get all Mr. Mackey, but........

Drugs are bad...I'm talking about your OXYCOTTON, your METH, your HEROIN, your COKE...

I got stuck in that fucking smack rut for three years of my life...got thrown out of my very popular (although not monetarily succesful) band, lost my sweet-hearted beautiful girlfriend and ALL of my friends...I kicked it though, and I kicked it alone...just about lost my mind completely...I weighed 198 pounds then (at 6' 11") and weigh 245lbs now (which happens to be my 'ideal weight' for my height and build)...You do not need any of these drugs to be more creative, more cool, or to validate your street cred...I basically chose drugs to be a part of something bigger, I wanted to be a real figure on the 90's Minneapolis music scene (which was quite a scene if you pay attention to your (shrug) 'grunge' history) and I thought if I shot dope, I would be one of the cool kids like K*%* in Run Westy Run (which was referred to as Run Junkie Run when I knew them) and I ended up wasting a good chunk of my supposed youth...luckily I was able to see Bob Stinson working in my restaurant (Pronto Ristorante in the Hyatt Regency) as a fucking pantry cook...AFTER all the success of the REPLACEMENTS...real glamorous watching 'Fat Bob' sneak off the line to go puke again...concentrate on your life and whatever your goals are...and, if you don't mind too much, have some fucking goals, otherwise you are not being part of any solution...fucking wasted youth is a shame...

    Sorry to preach,

It almost definately will not happen again...bad time of the year for me I guess.......

Come on, there are much bigger musical affronts than Godsmack. They're copycats for sure, but I think AIC's legacy is safe.
It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

  • He was into heroin for a LOOOOOONNNNNG time. The cover for the album Dirt was a painting he did when he realized that he was probably never going to be able to quit, and the album is basically the chronicle of a junkie from beginning to end.

Hell of a loss... he and Eddie were probably the two most imitated voices from that time.

    To quote Jerry Cantrell:
It's getting a little ridiculous with all these new generation "grunge" bands. Sounds like there's 20 new Pearl Jams popping up everyday. Folks, there's already one Eddie Vedder and he's doing quite fine.

Hey man, it's cool if you hate Godsmack. Personally I like them. They chose an AIC song as a tribute because they were a legendary band. Godsmack in no way resemble grunge or try to copy their style in any way. IF Layne were still alive, why would he have to defend himself against a highly successful band. Even though you hate them, you can't deny that they are successful in another style of music. I honestly don't think he would have any beef, seeing that Godsmack became successful 4 years before Layne's death.

  • GODSMACK rips off the sound, their 'logo' is basically an AIC logo...their name is a TRIBUTE??!!! I can't even argue any further if you don't think they sound similar...are you a cat? maybe a tree frog? You cannot be a human because any human would know that your statement is, in a word, nuts.

    wow...

P.S. I'm not using profanity because if, and I really mean IF you are a human, you are an infant and cussing at babies is NEVER cool..... :P

Man, immature doesn't cover it with you. Look, you can hate Godsmack I am totally cool with that. But if that's all you got, that is pretty weak. You're post is laughable, as are you.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

its such a shame layne took the path he took. his work with alice in chains and mad season was simply sensational. He was up there with Eddie and Kurt as the most talented singer of the 90's, with such a unique voice and great grasp on putting melodies to lyrics.

imagine if he was still around what kind of stuff Mad Season (if Saunders was also still around) would make, and also Alice in Chains (if he was still in the band). Imgaine if him Eddie and Chris Cornell got together and made a song together.

RIP to a truly talented legend
