Pearl Jam was just a fad band

That's what one of the guys I work with told me on friday.

In my cube at work I have multiple Pearl Jam related items. One of them is the picture of Eddie and Mike with their guitars in Italy from the last Deep magazine. At least a couple of times I get asked who they are. Usually when I say Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready people go "from Pearl Jam right?".

On friday a guy I work with was walking by. He stopped and asked who they were. I say Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready. He stated that he didn't know who that was. I stated they are in Pearl Jam. He goes "Oh yeah, I remember that band. They were just a fad band, back when grunge was cool". I said well they are still around and they are a Rock band. So he goes on to say how the would never get his respect till they have been around long enough and release enough albums. So I said "Well Ten was released over 16 years ago, and they have a total of 8 studio albums. They also released a geatest hits album and a b-sides collection. Along with several live shows. In 2000 alone they released 72 "bootlegs"". So then he argued that bootlegs don't count. Which I said fair enough.

So I asked him who he would consider a good band. Now from knowing this guy for a couple of years I was expecting him to answer either a country band, or a southern rock band. He is a bit of a redneck. His answer was Blondie. So, I chuckled and said "I guess your right".

Now I have nothing against Blondie. But, I didn't want to waste anymore time argueing with him.

Just thought I would share that with you guys.

    and how old are you?

Who cares what a co-worker thinks, if you like pearl jam that's all that matters
I just don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesn't die.
  • Not sure what my age has to do with anything. But I was a freshman in High School when Ten came out which quickly became my favorite album. By the time Vs. came out Pearl Jam was my favorite band.

I know that what I think is all that matters to me. I just love getting in these conversations with people.

It happens alot. Usually not negative like this one. Usually people are a little surprised to hear that Pearl Jam is still around. I have actually been able to re-introduce a few people to them by having the Pearl Jam items at work.

I would hide out in his cube under the desk and slice his Achilles tendons and then take him and his office chair and roll him over to the stairwell and push him down all the time singing "Sad"

When all is said and done, Blondie will rise above the rest to claim the top spot among bands. Groundbreaking, simply groundbreaking.

Good for you that you didn't argue him, it's pointless work, if he doesnt appreciate them now, he never will. At least you didn't condescend him and act like he was a low serf for not knowing a lot about Pearl Jam

That being said he is still a total dumbass that knows nothing about music in general
My god its been so long, never dreamed we'd return.

They ARE a fad band! A 16 year fad to be correct.

back in the grunge days I wrote off Pearl jam, Nirvana and soundgarden as well as many others as fad bands of the grunge era. Refused to listen to it. ( was listening to cool stuff like neil, janis, dylan) neil jamming with Pj during an awards night (RITFW) made me ask a friend to borrow ten.
I WAS VERY WRONG, ignorant and stupid but hey i was 21 and thought I knew everything

Do you remember Rock & Roll Radio?
