Just saw this briefly on the news. A gunman killed 13 people in an Immigration Center in Binghamton, NY. Barricaded the back door with his car so no one could escape. Man this world is a fucked up place.

I went to Binghamton University and a lot of my friends were within a couple of blocks from this. I'm happy to hear that none of them were hurt but am terribly upset that this had to happen at all.

In Australia we always read and see on the news shootings in the U.S and wish all guns would be banned there.
How do you guys over there feel about gun control?
I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful to your country but come on, how many more people need to die?

banning guns will not prevent them from falling into the hands of these animals. all it does is take away from the innocent that want to protect their home/family/livelihood.

I don't get that argument anymore, I mean didn't the guy walk in to a place where these innocent people who would have their guns away in your suggestion didn't have guns? Isn't there a chance that a gun ban might have prevented him from having a gun? Maybe...maybe not. Anyway I grew up in Binghamton, and my little sis goes to community college not more than 2-3 miles from the incident which sucked since I was teaching class where my students came in talking about this shooting in town while mom kept texting me and i couldn't stop and answer. Of course these days when you think mass shooting you think high school/college not some place like a civic center.

my mentality is more for home invasion. protecting what is yours.

as far as these big incidents? i don't know the solution to that. i wasn't suggesting that everyone should carry a gun on their hip like we are in the wild wild west again. but since you mention it, if someone was armed in the center, would this have been prevented? maybe. would a robber hesitate to hold up a 7/11 because he knows the cashier is armed? maybe. who knows? but i think an outright ban is not the answer.

i am not a gun advocate or whatever, i do not own one nor do i ever want to at this stage in my life. that being said, i don't think banning guns will really do anything at all to prevent things like this. people will find a way to get a gun if they want one. there are probably more guns on the black market than in the town markets anyways.

making things illegal will not get rid of them. drugs are illegal, but they are still pretty much everywhere.

yeah...it's something i'm really not sure on. I often thought like you did, but I'm not sure I fully dig the logic anymore. I mean in our scenario that assumes that someone in the center would feel the need to carry a gun for protection in Binghamton, NY (maybe not the best town in the world, but also not one associated with massive gun crime), or that all innocent people would carry a gun, and be confident enough to use it against another person. At the same time I'm not sure a gun ban will do anything b/c people with guns will have guns and we just assume that only 'bad' people would keep them while 'good' people would give them back, but that's a big assumption. Essentially any gun control or non-control in contemporary America will be a massively flawed system so I'm not sure what is the best way forward. I do know that we murder a crapload of people in the country with guns and that's probably not a good thing.
