Michelle Obama didn't use "proper protocol" in addressing the queen, and this is a big deal says the news. How terribly outdated is all this bullshit?

Last I checked, the queen "shits and stinks, is real, join the club." As a matter of fact, what extra respect is due to someone who has never worked a day in his or her life, and has had everything handed to them? What is the difference between the queen of England and someone who has been on welfare their entire life, except for the amount that has been given to them? If I'm supposed to bow before the queen, am I supposed to also bow before the terribly large percentage of this country that does absolutely nothing to pull their own weight? I'd rather not. I'd rather not bow to someone who works hard either, actually. "I just wanna be."

Can't we just come to our senses that we are all just people everywhere? That we should all be able to make ourselves, and let others do the same?

it is outdated BS...but if you are playing along, obviously you should follow proper protocol. if the obamas ARE meeting with the queen, obviously....they are going along with it. either way tho, in this instance...most definitely couldn't care less. proper protocol or not, i am sure she was polite and respectful.

i thought it funny that the obamas gave her an ipod, and she gave them an autographed picture of herself!

Obama's Ipod gift to the queen had video speeches of himself on it... Pretty funny that his gift back to her was also pretty vain... She can always delete those though, and have a pretty sweet gift. Obama's stuck with a crappy picture frame at best!

hahahahahaha...i didn't know that! i just saw a blurb about the gift under a pic on the cover of someone else's newspaper on my commute home last evening. so yea, both pretty vain gifts but you're right....at least obama's leaves more room for personal tastes.

She put her arm around the queen, I believe. It's my own fault for reading the story on the aol ticker the other day. Apparently though, the queen touched her first, so it should have been cool, but I guess it still isn't?

Who knows? It isn't really newsworthy. I'm commenting more on the fact that these people still follow these rules. It's one thing to be a "queen" it's another to hang on to the stupid traditions that come with it, that pretty much make everyone else in the world below you.
  • What the hell? Our leaders are supposed to bow to another leader? That in itself seems like we are subjugating ourselves to another country.

Wasn't the United States created specifically to not have a King or Queen to avoid shit like this? I don't care if it is custom, it is stupid and outdated.

She gives that exact same gift to every country's leader. Except when she's meeting the leaders of Commonwealth countries... for fucks sake, just turn into republics already.

shows how much i pay attention to the queen. :P
seriously, if someone's newspaper wasn't directly within my line of vision with a photo of em all and the caption underneath mentioning the gifts...i'd not have known at all. either way, don't really care....just thought it was funny. i'm sure every one who has received that thoughtful gift from the queen cherishes it. ;)

I don't know I think if you go to meet her in her house you should follow the rules (plus I am pretty sure it is the same deal in the White House if you meet the president and don't follow proper protocol). Plus as far as never working I am pretty sure being crowned queen means you are pretty much on the job working way more than anyone who works a 9-5 job.

Seriously, what would the queen have to do as work? As "queen" I don't think you even have to keep up appearances as other figureheads or celebrities have to do. Who's going to make her? Can anyone take away what she owns? She has accumulated thousands of years worth of wealth simply by BEING. I don't see anything she does as "work."

I am pretty sure the Queen reviews every piece of legislation to come out of British Parliment before signing it. She meets at least weekly with the Prime Minister to review what is going on with the government. She is basically the ambassador to every country in the world. She is the host for all those state dinners and crap like that. Plus she travels the world promoting England and she hands out all those military and civilian service awards. Plus she has been doing that shit for 50+ years. Sounds like a job to me, and it is one she was basically required to take and doesn't really get to retire from.
