Do any of you get depressed at how mundane rock is today?

Compared to pre- 2000?
I do, what's happened to the balls in rock?
What's happened to the fun?
The spirit?

When I watch some of the youtubes of shows from the late 80s/early-mid 90s I think wtf is this crap we got now?

I hope something big explodes in rock again, 50's birth of r'n'r, 70s punk, 90s grunge, 10's (??????)
Every 20 years something explodes.

What was fun about grunge and the alt-rock it spawned? It was so dour and depressing. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just saying. Arctic Monkeys, JET, Buckcherry... all a helluva lot more ballsy and fun than anything I recall from the early 90s.

The crowds at shows sure did seem a lot more energetic back then, but I think the music in general is pretty damn good now adays. Just a bit different.

I agree with all points of this conversation honestly. Yeah I do think music on the radio has gotten really mundane and it has actually turned me off of listening to the radio except when in the car, but I usually listen to the classic rock station. There is still a ton of good bands out there, but most of the ones I listen to are on indie labels and I very rarely buy cds anymore because it's easier to just get on itunes.
I have not really noticed a difference in crowds at shows, as already mentioned it depends on the band playing and the general environment that an artists carries. There is still moshpits, surfing and all that stuff (but I choose to stay out of that kind of stuff) and just watch shows and enjoy them for what they are.
Most of the music radio wise sounds the same- Most of the popular music on modern rock radio just sounds like watered down thrash metal- it's all heavily distorted guitars and it's boring to me.

I don't get depressed. Rock radio has probably always been pretty crappy. Sure there are times when "cooler" music is popular, but even then 90% of the music bein played on rock radio was just as crappy as todays music. Sure the Beatles, Zep, Pink Floyd, AIC etcetcetc get it right, but there have always been the Journeys of the world.

Wait....did you include Alice In Chains along with the others?? Just seems odd to me to have bands from the 60's/70's and then add another band from 20 years later.

Unless the AIC you mentioned is a different band.

AIC is an example of a band making good music that got radio play during their time period like the other good bands he listed from the 70's. He just only picked one band as an examble of the 90's

There is plenty of great music out there today.

Don't rely on Rockin' Rod and his bullshit corporate rock radio station to feed you the goods.

Go out...Hit the small clubs and bars, drink a beer or six, and check out the up and coming bands; it'll cost you $10-$15 cover tops.

    You may be surprised...

Rock music is still very strong and every bit as interesting as it was 10-15 years ago.

Within the last 6 months I've seen amazing shows from Feist, Broken Social Scene, Kathleen Edwards, and Metric... These are some of the best shows I've ever seen.

    Music is doing just fine.

  • anyone who is knowledgable and knows their worth in salt in music, will tell you, music is very much alive and well, and rock and roll is not dead or mundane.

You just have to turn off MTV and Vh1 and the radio to find it.

Sure, Three days Grace, Nickelback and others are the face of modern day mainstream rock, and that is very tragic but, they dont represent rock. There is a difference.

If all you do is listen to the radio, you are obviously going to here crap. I dont listen to the radio.

Keep your ears open. Ask others for recommended bands. Read interviews with bands you like and see who influenced them. Read some of the music blogs. Watch some tv shows or commercials and try and listen for bands who are playing.

The indie rock scene is the most vibrant and unique musical movemen t I can think of, and its the current zeitgeist.

Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Stars, Sufjan Stevens, The National, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Damien Rice, Iron and Wine.

Rock and Roll isnt dead with those people making music.

Its always facinating how few people are willing to shut off the infernal racket on the radio, and tune out. While at the same time tuning in, tuning in to quality music.

I saw them on Wednesday... It was the fourth time I've seen them, and they are getting better and better. The energy at those shows is out of this world... Emily is one of the best front-people in rock, period, and the new album is amazing.

They closed with 'Live It Out' - the slow version...After the first verse... They stopped, the crowd just went NUTS for a good 15 seconds... I was front and centre, the look on her face was that of utter shock... Plus she gave me a hug at the end of the show (again!!)... The only problem with Metric shows is they're so short, but it doesn't matter as much, the energy is there..The people that say 'music is no good these days' are no different than their parents were...

I saw... 22 shows last year? Including Springsteen and Vedder.. Feist and Broken Social Scene were the best ones I saw. Feist was just PERFECT... None of the yelling that plagued the Eddie shows, just pure respect from the audience. Amazing.

    Basically, music is fine.

Personally im ok with it. i listen to a fairly good spread of music and have never really found any of it on radio. go to festivals, and go to the smaller tents. and go to gigs in smaller venues if there are any near you, and you'll always find something.

and anyway - The Melvins, Mudhoney, The Meat Puppets, Blind Melon, Alice In Chains, Sonic Youth, etc and many of the older legends are still knocking out music in some shape or form, so im happy with that.

sure i miss the 90s, but stuff that has evolved since is great too: off the top of my head:

QOTSA, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Trail of Dead, Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai, Mastodon, System Of A Down (shame about hiatus), Lion For A Day, Sigur Ros, Jimmy Cake, Isis, GY!BE, NIN, Silversun Pickups, Bell X1, Daft Punk, Saul Williams, The Streets, Matisyahu, The Eels, Me 1st & Gimmes, Elbow, !!!, John Butler Trio, DeVotchKa, Kaki King, Beirut, State Radio, I'm From Barcelona, Architecture In Helsinki, Bat For Lashes, Final Fantasy, Messiah J & The Expert......theres plenty of stuff ive found that excites me and throws more at me in a live show than the majority of the crap bands around in the 90s.

off the top of my head Mastodon, ISIS, TV on the Radio, State Radio, The Sword, Radiohead and Liam Finn are all really fresh and exciting. In fact Mastodon has made 2 of the best records of the decade, Leviathan and Crack the Skye, so has ISIS with Panopticon and the Absence of Truth.

It is out there you are just not searching hard enough. :?

  • yeah man, five finger death fiasco makes me wretch....this does always happen though...cyclical as hell...and with the record labels losing money like crazy, there's not much incentive to promote or even go looking for talent...a band can make their own records, promote their own websites and shows...pretty scary in a whole new way to me...you think Bill Gates sleeps well knowing that his home computer has altered so many things in a negative way?

How can you get excited about anything that has to do with music when there is no anticipation anymore...you can see just about any concert within hours or even minutes after it has ended on the internet...leaked tracks, photographs.everything...we have it all yet we're still in a hurry for more

Only thing that gets me is the lack of good new bands out there. Love the shows I go to (which is plently - usually between 20 and 30 per year), but there isn't much new that's grabbing my attention.

There is a lot of worthless music out on mainstream radio... I've found that Sirius XM's Liquid Metal/Hard Attack has great undiscovered (or not played on FM 104) talent. Genghis Tron, I Am The Ocean, Daath... all good stuff.

And someone mentioned recomendations from friends... that's still the best way to go. All of you should check out Mokoma... they are a Finnish thrash metal group. Fantastic stuff.

All of these fine folks are right; music is doing just fine. The Arcade Fire's first two albums were fantastic, Liam Finn's first one was great, the National are very, very good, Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst continues to release solid albums, and Radiohead's last one was pretty good as well.

Heartless Bastards, the Thermals, Ra Ra Riot, the Gaslight Anthem, Bon Iver and the Black Keys are all solid up-and-coming bands.

Wilco, Sonic Youth, REM, Broken Social Scene and Neko Case are all veterans that continue to release great albums.

And I've been saying this for years, but Modest Mouse and Queens of the Stone Age are two bands that continue to release fantastic, out of this world, relevant albums time and time again. They have done no wrong with the past ten years.

You just have to give it a chance, man. If you're expecting to see the next big thing WITH TALENT! in an arena anytime soon, you're out of luck. Pick up a copy of SPIN magazine and read the firt half of the magazine with all the buzz bands; a lot of those bands are pretty good. Or read their album reviews. They do more obscure, off of the radar stuff than you'd expect.

  • If you are currently bummed about the current state of rock, you can always back log into bands from the past. There is a plethora of material that I'm sure will blow you away. I spent the better part of last year getting into the bands featured in the book, "Our Band Could Be Your Life." ( A few of those bands are actually still kicking out new material.)

I think that rock isn't as exciting as it used to be to most people because they're simply not at the start of their youth and are at the brink of discovering the great world of rock'n'roll! Most people here have been through it and have way to much knowledge & listening experience to be "fooled" by the music industry like they've been 10 or 20 years ago (depends on your age). Time to take some deep breaths and if you don't expect anything you might even get surprised ... ;)

    1) Turn off the radio.
    2) Check out Dr.Dog's album "Fate"
    3) Go see Dr.Dog Live

This is sure to put a smile on your face
