Rules of cutting in line

This is not spawned by anything recent, and I'm sure this will prove to be one of the most mindless threads, however... there should be specific rules for cutting in a line.

Last year at a small waterpark my little niece and I were at the top of a waterslide, for her first attempt at a tall slide. We were about 1 spot away from going. Out of nowhere two boys went in front of us and asked their friend in front of us if they could cut in front of them. Their friend said "ok" and I said "wait a second, you can GIVE him YOUR spot in line, but you can't let him cut in front of you (and us) because that makes everyone wait longer". Their friend then told them "no", and the 9 year-olds left defeated.

Made me think that there should be specific rules for cutting.

-If you want to "cut" you need permission from everyone behind the spot you are going into.
-If you are in a grocery store, you can add something to someone else's basket who is already in line, but not cut in line if you are paying separately.

...any other rules of cutting?
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

If Im in the store and I have a lot of items and someone behind me is just buying one thing, I usually let them go or if they ask me I let them. I remember having a situation in a CVS once. I went to pay for my things..there was no one in line and I went right up to the register. Then this lady came from nowhere, saying she was paying. I was like wtf...evidently she stepped off line to get another item and expected to still have her place
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

you can only save a space for one other person with you, period. otherwise, just don't cut ahead...it's rude. it IS nice when you are in the market with only a few items if someone lets you go ahead...but good karma dictates you do the same.

I guess to me, the rule of cutting is no cutting. Wait your turn in the order you got there. Keep it simple.

I've never heard of the 'ask everyone in line behind the person you're cutting in front of' rule. Seems pretty inefficient to me, which defeats the purpose of cutting. I think if you're cutting you're already doing something you shouldn't so there really aren't any 'rules' (except maybe don't look anyone else in the line behind you in the eye and DONT EVER apologize because then you'll DEFINITELY hear it from the people you just screwed out of benefiting from order and decency).
I smile, but who am I kidding...

someday you too will be a senior citizen and there will be newer technology you are unfamiliar with...or that you simply can't see/understand w/o your glasses that you can't seem to remember ;)......so keep that in mind, and be kind to the old folks people! :)

and yes, jane said it best....the rule is, don't do it!

i'm completely understanding....and totally kind to the older folks....i know what i'm in for when i get in line behind the blue hairs...sometimes the checker will help them out with the payment aprt if they're using a credit card....the frustration sets in when the checker won't help....sometimes i've stepped in to help

    yes, someday.
this what i always try to tell my husband when he freaks out in the car, or on line, when behind the senior citizens. :P believe me, i am NOT the most patient person in the world...not by a long-shot...but somehow, instinctually, i am a lot more patient with animals, children and seniors. altho really, the kids lately have been getting on my nerves, tho for that i blame mostly the parents in any case. but now i digress. anyhoo....yea...that's my thing. be kind to seniors. i guess too especially since we'll basically be seniors all on our own, no kids, etc to look out/help us out......so yea....just a 'thing' with me. and i've taken this thread into too 'serious' territory now, mea culpa.

glad to know you're a nice guy norm. :)
but really, i already knew that anyway.
and believe me, i DO understand your frustration........
