Started in Sydney, Australia in 2007, Earth Hour quickly grew into a global observance. More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions. Collected here are a series of before-and-after photographs - which (starting with the second one below) will fade between "on" and "off" when clicked. Let me state that again, since I know not everyone reads the whole intro here -

Why not (V) (°,,,,°) (V) ?
Its just a little ploy for I dont even know what. It's going to take a LOT more than that to get people to be aware about this stuff.

you're welcome.
That's sort of what have thought about this thing. It is just a massive amount of lip service. I mean in reality demand for electricity at 830 on a Saturday night in early spring is probably fairly low to begin with. Why not start shutting lights off, or better yet computers and AC equipment for an hour on a Wednesday afternoon in the middle of summer? That would be an actual sacrifice.
And on a more general note I think the whole idea of doing something to "raise awareness" is generally a load of crap anyways. I mean who hasn't heard about climate change. And if someone has and isn't sure if they buy it, is shutting off the lights for an hour going to convince them?
That's a good point..it's not like people don't know what going on in the world. I find people just don't give a shit and there is nothing you can do about that.
Yeah yeah, what’s one hour going to do?
…….give us pretty pics to look at. If nothing else I don’t think you can deny that.
