I think you need to define the question a little bit more.

Do you mean who is the most talented at their given instrument? Or who is the most talented overall, IE playing other instruments, writing music/lyrics.

I'm leaning towards Matt in any case.

Matt is probably the most talented on a technical level. He drums, sings, plays guitar, and writes songs. And usually the songs he writes are more technical and diverse then anything anyone is the band writes. (except get right) Not to mention the other projects he has been in where he plays jazz druming, and sings for WWC.

ok...so i thought about it for a little bit while i was studying.

my vote goes to Stone. i really like his solo stuff a lot. he can also sing & play many instruments, like Matt. also, it seems like his style is so varied.

Ed really made it tough, though. Into The Wild is brilliant. Matt's up there too, but my vote goes to Stone.

    sorry for the wait. 8-)

Ed is second cuz like you said into the wild is amazing. AND he is an amazing writer.

I think it's Ed. He has shown that he knows how to play the most instruments proficiently.

Matt is probably the most technically advanced member of the band.

    Stone.

It just seems like every time I hear a song that has what in my mind is that "classic PJ sound", whenever I look up the songwriting credits Stone is always at the helm.

To me (and not to put them on another level that angers people by any means), Stone is kind of like our George Harrison. The backbone of the band, but in a non-flashy way. The one that might not be recognized at the moment, but when things are reflected on further down the line people realize how instrumental he was in the success of the band.

    Tough call.

    Stone - riff creator extraordinaire
    Mike - tasty solo's
Bass - brilliant grooves on the bass
Matt - brilliant with the chops
Ed - songwriting genius, amazing voice, amazing stage presence

    Stone Gossard

Even if Interiors is my favourite side project album, I think both Brad and his solo efforts have had a mix of weak and strong moments. The same can be said for side projects of the other members as well. None show greater range than Matt C in Wellwater Conspiracy.

Nevertheless, as strong as Pearl Jam is, with Mike's solos and Eddie's remarkable voice in the front, and a fantastic rythm section to back them up, it's Stone's song writing and riffs, and Eddie's lyrics that make the greatest difference. Eddie is my favourite singer, but singers like Stipe, Staley, Hetfield, Rose, Cornell to name a few all have/had great voices with great bands backing them up. I truly believe that it was Stone's song writing and Eddie's lyrics that set Pearl Jam apart from the rest, and made them my favourite band. In later years the best songs have been more equally split, but from a musical point of view, my nod still goes to Stone.

I agree whole heartedly that Stone makes the "classic pj sound" songs. I am the same way i hear a song and i'm like damn that is "PJ" song and sure enough it is stone.

I would rank them as follows:
    matt
    stone
    ed
    mike
    jeff

That said they are all good and they all play their instruments very well and work great together.

Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
