Rock Hall... Will Pearl Jam be like Metallica?

edited March 2009 in The Porch
So as some of you may have seen today, Metallica is allowing bygones to be bygones and what not at its induction into the Rock Hall, inviting many former staffers and members to be a part of the celebration....

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/met ... 6532.story

I am not familiar with what happened when Blondie was inducted, feel free to fill me on if you know, but do you all think there is a better chance Hell freezes over, or that if/when PJ gets inducted, they invite Dave A. to be a part of it? I know most bands play 3 songs, but it would be cool if PJ played 4, with Dave K., Dave A., Jack and Matt all playing a song. But as is the case with Metallica, it would be enough to just invite all those guys, but is there any chance it would ever happen? I understand and completely respect there were differences between some band members, but would it be so bad to just let it all go and celebrate the good times for a night? Hopefully we can find out in about 7 years.
words seem so out of place.

I don't think it would be a bad thing to invite them onstage during the induction, but in all honesty I don't think they should perform. Matt has been with the band the longest as a drummer, 11 years now I believe. Assuming he stays till they get inducted will put him @ 18 years with PJ. Give the previous drummers their due and mention their role in helping build the band, but don't shit where Matt eats. That's my 2 cents.

I doubt Dave A will be there...did anyone else notice on the unplugged dvd on the menu page there are only pics of EV, Mike, Stone, and Jeff?? I thought that was kind of a diss right there..funny, but still a diss.

i was watching the Freddie Mercury tribute concert today and Metallica opens it. Newsted kicks so much ass as a part of that band.....when i saw them in 97 and 98, i watched him all the time. He had "it" up there. real passion and energy, really feeling it, what the fans feel.

Not that I think Dave A. should be there, but I did think of a counterargument.

Dave K. and Dave A. both drummed on the albums which more than likely were the reason for them to get inducted. They'd be getting inducted because Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy were huge. If those albums had sold/were as popular as binaural, riot act, avacado, they wouldn't be getting inducted.

So they both had a hand in getting pearl jam there.

well i think they'd allow Jack Irons to play ......seeing as he has already played with them since he left the band.(2003 Santa Barbara) and Matt played guitar while he drummed....In My Tree and one other song. and considering the role he had in getting the guys together, he should be there.

Dave K - the guys has referred to this new found respect they have for his drumming on Ten & how important a part of it he was (after going over the tapes for remastering Ten)...Eddie said something like it was unfortunate he was going through what he was going through at the time. He should be there anyway.

Dave A - he's a poser, he pulls stupid faces....but he was an insanely good drummer and was a big part of the change in PJs sound from Ten - Vs . If the guys in the band do dislike him they should invite him anyway, he was there for the biggest 2 years they had, if those egotistic assholes Metallica can celebrate the occasion and let bygones be bygones, surely PJ can?

Some people listen to music for the music. Some don't.

edit: and what's your definition of a "bum"? You use it twice, so the meaning is significant. Can you elaborate?

I think that whoever was a member of PJ should be invited. It would be mighty big of PJ to allow all the members to have a spot in the recognition of the band by R&R. I hope PJ is big enough to transcend their own drama, and allow a performance with Krusen, Abbruzzese and Irons during the ceremony.

If PJ did not invite the past members I would def change my outlook on the band.

    Why?
I think being in the Rock Hall has to do with longevity with the band's career-- as a band.
Are you going to invite your ex-wife to your golden anniversary party??
If one of the band members mentions past drummers, that's fine. But all of them being there -- not necessary.

WHO'S golden anniversary? You mean a wedding anniversary? How can a 50th wedding anniversary for the Smith family happen if Mrs Smith is an Ex? That means they didn't get to 50 years, correct?

I think your analogy is apples to bananas, unless you are talking about 25 years of music since 1998, after Matt joined.

Anyone see the Van Halen R&R? Or the Led Zeppelin R&R?

Van Halen only had two members show up, Mike and Sammy. Neither of them are in the band anymore. Pathetic that Eddie, Alex and David couldn't come together to do this.

Led Zeppelin had Page & Plant on one part of the stage, and awkwardly standing with them JPJ. Page & Plant were not very good to JPJ, so JPJ had the chance to give them a stab back, which they deserved.

I think that if PJ had grace, they will allow all PJ members to accept the award. ...and imo, they would not have been as popular without the hard work of Dave A.

Metallica is doing the right thing. Bringing back Mcgovney, Newsted, INVITING Mustaine. It's a night honoring THOSE who made the band what it is. If a band can't appreciate it's roots then what the fuck? You can't forget about Krusen,Abruzzese,Chamberlin,Irons..

No need to start this discussion again but clearly Dave A. made the biggest contribution to PJ than any other drummer they had. He was the most talented one and defined the sound that made PJ famous. I think a statement like this can only come from someone who generaly gives a shit about drummers which of course is OK. Matt and Jack however might fit better with the band and stayed longer so they also deserve credit but really what they play is just standard (not to say boring) rock stuff. Dave A. gad the funk - which in my opinion made PJ unique because they had this hard sound but at the same time they grooved like hell.

That said if i were Dave A. I would not go anyway. I think this chapter is closed and he went on quite well (well not if you only looks at record sales). What i always find funny is that often people say that Dave A. was to commercial or something but if you look at what type of music he makes now it`s much more experimental and uncommercial than anything PJ has put out after he left ;)

Dave enjoyed the life of being a Rockstar. But you can only enjoy it when Eddie decides too! :)

Anyways. I can see them having Dave A join such an event, i could also see why they would go "as is".

    agreed

dave k, dave a , matt c, jack irons and matt cam should all be there. they all were part of a legendary band and should be noted for that. lets be honest dave a was the drummer for the bands glory days.

We don't know the whole story with Pearl Jam and their past drummers, so it's a little difficult predicting who will get the invite.

Dave Krusen - He played on an album (Ten), so I think he deserved an invite right there.

Matt Chamberlain - He replaced Krusen and played only "a handful of shows" (according to Wikipedia). Do we know if he was ever a member or merely a guy to temporarily fill a void? See, there's grey area :)
Dave Abbruzzese - We're not for sure how bad things were, but he did play on Vs. and Vitalogy. I think he deserves an invite.

Jack Irons - He knew "Crazy Eddie" and suggested him to Stone and Jeff. He played on No Code and Yield. Definitely should get an invite.

I can see them bringing Dave Abbruzzese out for the induction ceremony, I think they are going to want to acknowledge his, Jack and Dave K's contributions.

Dave enjoyed the life of being a Rockstar.

Do you have anything at all to back this up? What do you consider "the life of being a Rockstar"?
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

I think this comes from the book "Five Against One", in it it's discussed how after the Ten tour the guys in Pearl Jam came home to Seattle and discovered they were rich. They were obviously aware of their huge success but they didn't really see the financial end until they got home after the long touring, the book discusses how they acted as soon as they got home and accessed their new found income.

The book mentions Dave purchased a new Infiniti Q45 and was quite flashy, the other members of Pearl Jam were more subdued with how they spent their new found money and not happy with Dave playing the "rock star". The only other mentions about new purchases when they got off the Ten tour was Ed buying a house, Jeff buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee and Stone buying a watch or something like that.
