HAHA i was thinking the EXACT same thing today. As much as I love it, it's just vocals and drums. My one buddy was like whats wrong with his drumming? And I said nothing if its a live show, this is unplugged. Most play with brushes or a muted set or at least they don't play with EVERY crash cymbal known to man. However, he is an AMAZING drummer
Anyone else get the feeling that someone forgot to tell Dave that it was unplugged. I wish I could hear Mike and Stones guitars more.
In his defense he didn't have the benefit of seeing how gracefully a hard hitting drummer could transition to being quietly effective ala Dave Grohl in Nirvana's Unplugged show. Using brushes, settling down on the symbols, etc...
Could he have hit a little softer/quieter? Sure. But his little fills still rule.
"A lot more people are capable of being big out there that just don't give themselves a chance." -Stone Gossard
I just watched this this morning, and was surprised that Dave had a fulll kit, and that he wasnt at least using paintbrushes, or something of the like. But, Mike and Stone are just playing acoustic guitars, probably the loudest unplugged show, but I've only also seen Nirvana's and AiC's.
his playing always distracted everything else going on for me. the first time I ever really watched unplugged was when I got the SDE. His playing is such overkill.
I've gotta say, I'm an avid Dave fan, but I can agree to this. However Matt never learned intricate, so it was a major trade-off imo on just about everything in their early catalog played live.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

Had to look up intricate, a new english word I learnt
I think daves drumming fits with the rest of them playing. I prefer the unplugged feel of benaroya but Daves playing works with how they did it on MTV. No complaints from me I think the drumming is one part you remember from this show, at least when I think about it in my head.
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"
You are all joking right? His drumming is incredible! I think even if it`s unplugged they could have turned it down in the mix maybe but there is nothing to blame Dave A. for! He actually plays quite relaxed compared to his normal live drumming. This think grooves and that`s the biggest difference to Benaroya. Benaroya has no groove at all. I think comparing Benaroya to MTV unplugged pretty much sums up how PJ have changed. They have lost the groove. I still love PJ even their latest albums. There isn`t really anything from them that I don`t like but the groove has left 94 - that`s a fact. That said I don`t argue that some like it more without the funk.
I think in fact the band himself wanted the sound to be more "trashy" - well they`ve succeeded in that

It's called being more mature musicians.
They don't play their early songs the way they used to not because any member can't, but because the songs probably don't have the same meaning they used to and they aren't a bunch of crazy 20-somethings anymore.
Comparing Unplugged to Benaroya is kinda dumb. Different times, different energy.

That`s a good argument indeed. Sure they also lost some energy because they are old men now but still does that mean you are only allowed to play standard rock grooves? I mean Mike also still plays great solos and has not reduced them to 1 note solos or?
I think the drumming was a spectacular performance and that all too often we forget that it isn't just "about the music" but is also about the performarnce of the music. What is clearly conveyed by the members of the band during this performance of their music is that it mattered and it had power. The drumming and performances like that of Unplugged are one thing I sorely miss. I loved the intensity and the genuine enjoyment on display for us to enjoy. I don't get the same impression at all from Matt these days. I do from Mike. Stone seems almost dead during many performances now and that's a damn shame.
I honestly think that Dave's drumming added a very special element and attitude to their music and I think he deserves more credit than is often afforded to him. While it may be fair to comment about maturity and things like that as a defense for their modern performances.... it's just as fair to say that Dave's drumming and attitude brought something equally formidable to the table.

Ahhh thanks! As a none native speaker I sometimes have problems finding the right words and tend to sound rude or too critical  This sums it up perfectly for me
exatcly what pearl jam has always fought is the pressure of people's expectations.
somebody made a reference on this very thread about using brushes as opposed to sticks. They called them "paint brushes"??
now it's funny because I am a professional painter (passed down from my grandfather's business) as well as a drummer (15 years of study and playing)... a PAINT brush is not even close to percussive wire brushes!!
my point is, know something before you form your opinion... and dont knock it til' you've tried it.

As a drummer myself and being a fan of Dave, I like it. My setup is similar to his and he is one of my influences. I even have my splash right over the hats for quick 16th's transition from hats to other cymbals.
yeah, he is a little louder than everyone though
If memory serves, Dave Grohl used brushes and "hot rods" ....Dave probably tears up hotrods on the cymbals ha
If a man speaks in a forest and there is no woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?
I just wanted to hear Mike more. I could hardly hear him play ever. Maybe it was premature for Pearl Jam to play unplugged and should have probably prepared and practiced properly.
I love alliterating.
