what a dickhead....how a person of such low intelligence gets a badge is frightening....i give props to the chief of police for not defending this twat in any way
Yeah, I was sickened when I read this story. And then I watched the tape. Usually I defend cops, but in this case, this guy totally abused his authority and forget about common human decency.
All over the news here in Dallas. It is sickening. People are trying to make a race issue out of it because the cop is white and Moats is black. I am not denying that, and I think race played a part, but I think this is bigger than that. It is a cop on a power trip, and abusing the power of his badge instead of showing compassion and acting like a human being and everyone here is shocked and outraged regardless of race.
The worst part is this cop reviewed the tape with his superiors and then claimed he did nothing wrong and was just doing his job!
I normally defend cops as well, but this guy crossed the line. No way he keeps his job. You do not make your police department a topic of national conversation in a negative manner and keep your job.
I can understand to a point that unfortunately people lie and you just can't let people go right away, but according to the article I read yesterday that even after hospital staff came out to verify that his mother-in-law was dying, the cop still wouldn't let him go.

About half through a copy of hospital security guards came out and confirmed the code blue and the cop then proceeded to run Moats' info to see if there were any warrants out for his arrest. Then 5 minutes later the head nurse came down and pleaded with the cop and the cop told her to hold on I'm almost finished. Watching the video was ridiculous.
I guess these cops must have gotten picked on a lot as kids...
Yeah... I've never directly encountered a cop like that (my run-ins have always been cordial ), but this guy is the epitome of the picked on kid who gets a badge and thinks that he's Johnny Law... Those power-trip cops always piss me off.

I lived in the Dallas - Metroplex area for 7 years.
Unfortunately, when it comes to many of the officers in this area, these actions are par for the course. Having said this, I've never been in trouble with the law and am usually supportive of those who put their lives on the line for mine. But, numerous complaints against this department have caused me to feel this way.
I don't know if this was racially motivated but there are race relation issues in Dallas, where law enforcement is concerned.
In defense of the Texas State Troopers, they are non-prejudicial group - they're pricks to everyone!

Not only that but another police officer (from Plano) confirmed the story and asked the Dallas cop to let him go. He still refused.
What I don't get is why couldn't he let the guy go inside and then run his name/license plate through the computer then.
I mean its not like the car was going anywhere at that point, and they would have to come back out at some point. Also I assume a ticket for running a red light is just a misdemeanor, so they could have just sent the ticket in the mail, right?

its not a cop abusing his power its racism simple as that.

It wasn't racism.
yea sure it wasnt and pigs can fly. open your eyes man, and realize shit like this goes on everyday. ask any black man how many times they've been pulled over by a white cop for driving a nice car. i highly doubt a white person would be pulled over for speeding to the hospital

I don't doubt that racism happens everyday. It happens in every city of course. But the cop saw the truck run the redlight and went after him. He was doing his job but then made a huge fucking mistake. The cop is not a rookie but still a newer cop I believe. He should have used better judgement. Younger cops don't have that full street experience yet. He will live with this mistake I'm sure for the rest of his life.
I have two uncles that are retired Milwaukee police officers/ detectives. One was over today and we brought up this situation. My uncle said he had a couple situations where he pulled somebody over that was driving fast and wreckless. The drivers were in a rush to get to the hospital due to a wife going into labor or a loved one that was sick. My uncle knew they were telling the truth and told them to stay on his bumper and follow him to the hospital.
I'm in no fucking way defending this cop in Texas. He should be fired IMO. But I just don't buy the race card on this one.

i do for 2 reasons. theres race issues going on down as someone mentioned a few posts go and 2nd why do you need feel the need to run a warrant check for as a nurse is pleading to let him go.

Well you and I disagree and there's nothing wrong with that.
Let me clear up my statement. I didn't say it wasn't racism. I said it wasn't ONLY rascism. I think race played a huge part. But the other huge part was this cop abusing his power, which also happens a lot regardless of race.
It was a cop using bad judgement and on a power trip maybe. But please don't use the race card.
I'm not one for pulling the racism card but a couple of times through the video I certainly wondered. He seemed to enjoy the whole thing... even when he told him at the end to run along to his mother in law, he was still lecturing him and telling him to watch his attitude  now come on... if that's not blatently trying to get a rise out of someone, then what is?
When the other cop confirmed what the nurse said, that she's dying right now, he was like 'yeh, I'm nearly finished' and then proceeded to give him one final lecture... the whole thing was completely disgusting. Fair play to the two men for keeping their composure though.. I woulda just walked off like the two women did and deal with it afterwards.

I'm sorry, but I ahve to disagree too. It's not simply racism, there is more to it than that. There is no real hard evidence to say it's strictly a racial biast. I'm not saying that that didn't have an influence becuase that is definitely possible, but there is more to it than that in my opinion.
This cop looks like a young guy. A new cop, fresh out of the academy who wants to clean the streets. I think the guy has a bit of identity crisis going on here and really enjoys his position as an authority figure. People like him have no business being cops if their goign to get a high off of abusing their power.
This guy is probably one of those cops that you'd see in public with his uniform on holding his chin high and puffing his chest out with a strut thinking he's a bad ass cause he can flash some "red and blue".
Administrative leave my ass, this guy should have some kind of dishonorable discharge for this if there is a such thing in the Police dept. He has no remorse for his jackass behavior, won't make a public apology. Robert Powell needs to get over himself, and probably start looking for a new career to. His name is fucked, at least in the Dallas area..
