Anyone else not care when music or a band is popular?

I used to be a fascist about this stuff. But I think we all can bow down to Fugazi and Mudhoney and Uncle Neil and the very short list of people who have never sold out ever. And I think we can also respect and enjoy bands who either because of some need to make a more poppy/mainstream record, or for whatever reason become popular because of some cultural zeitgeist and consumer taste.
To hate a band that is popular seems to be very limiting.
Maybe I say this because my music of choice, indie rock, is the main and dominant scene in music, and is very popular. When Starbucks sells CD's of indie rock bands which in turn get played by soccer mom's, then you have a shift.
I used to be this way, but I have changed. Just because a band is the popular band doesnt make that bands songs any less important.
I think its awesome to finally feel a part of a musical movement. I grew up on Grunge, and waited and waited for some scene to save me. It took until 2003 or 2004, but its a pretty incredible scene currently.
Anyways, why do people hate bands that are popular?
Its funny, PJ was once the biggest band in the world, and of course, they hated that. And to many the bands unpopularity was a badge of honor. Now people whine and complain that Pj dont get enough credit.
Do you really want PJ to be a more household band name?

I think its related to the fact that a lot of people want to think of themselves as unique and different and many people define part of their personality by what music they like. Liking something that millions of others also like, is going to be hard to reconcile with the idea of being unique and different.

**Cough**KOL**Cough**Cornell**
But other than that, I couldn't give 2 shits.
I love Pearl Jam and I love Kanye West. It doesn't really matter to me, I like what I like.
KoL changed their style? When? OBtN sounds ALOT like BotT, except the tunes on OBtN are fully developed.
I think they have had a pretty natural progression, but their isn't a huge range of styles in their music, really.
You hit it on the head there . . . the problem isn't the popularity of a band, it's the type of fans that come with it (I think that's a line in a Sloan song somewhere :? ).
I saw a band in November 2007 at a small venue and the show was awesome - the whole crowd was into it. Same band in February 2008 at a slightly larger venue - I didn't enjoy the show nearly as much because so many people around us were too busy chatting during the show instead of actually being there to enjoy it! The band was just as good but the crowd ruined the vibe.
I think BOTT is a has a darker dirtier sound to it . . IMO. Where OBTN sounds light and airy with the exception of Crawl and Closer.
All I can say is that personally, nothing is more irritating to me than people saying they "love" a certain band, but you know it's only because it's the popular thing that day. But whatever, I guess if that's the reason you want to support things then so be it, but I don't what to hear about how much of an "individual" they are...
Same thing goes for when people say "I heard that movie sucked, so I wont' watch it." Why not develop a judgment and opinion of your own, and if you like it because YOU like it, cool.
*sigh*, I'm ranting. To answer your question: No, I dont' care either

Why waste your time on a movie that you heard sucked?
Why not? Maybe that persons opinion is no where near what mine will be, and I might like the movie. It may not even come close to sucking. If it does, it won't take me until the end credits to get my conclusion.
Let's just say I'm glad I decided to form my own opinion on Pearl Jam after someone told me "Don't bother listening, they suck!"

That's true. If someone tells me a movie sucks and it was a movie I was interested in seeing, I will still see it. But if I was on the fence and I hear a movie sucks then I won't waste my time. You were just so adamant about never listening when someone told you something sucks. A lot of times hearing something sucks will save you from having to endure it.
A lot of popular bands suck today.
Sure Pearl Jam, Nirvana, AIC, SG etc were popular, but they were/are brilliant.
Valid point, and I agree...although I guess I've never felt that I have wasted my time even when I listen to a band that I didn't care for...I feel good knowing that I tried them and gave them a fair judgment if I was curious. If I wasn't curious though, then yes...I probably wouldn't care to listen.

Those bands have been highly influential too. As much as there is music out there now that could potentially influence future groups/artists, I think there is an abundance of music out there that isn't special enough to really influence and make an impact.

being "popular" doesn't matter in the grand scope of things. it's just so personal.
