Anybody have any good knowledge of this? It's something I've wanted to pick up for a long time...I just don't know what to look for when buying a board. Of course I don't want to buy something top of the line...but I want my money's worth.

Help would be much appreciated :)

I stand up paddle board and it's awesome. :D You can take your board out in any conditions (unless it's hugely windy)...I haven't taken it in to any waves yet, but I've seen a lot of people do it and it looks really incredible...Laird Hamilton says that if he could only surf one way it would be the SUP because you can do anything with it..

Those boards can cost $500 up to whatever you want to spend...

As for longboarding...can't comment on that...

Haha...Thanks for the input, although there isn't much surfing to do in Utah...I guess I could go try it in the Salt Lake but I don't think I'll get much waveage out there.

    Thx for replying though :)

Extremely fun and convenient when your shortboard just won't do (waves less than 3 feet high). I haven't really tried it on bigger waves, cause I use a 6'0' shortboard.

It can be a bit expensive though... I wouldn't know how much would a longboard cost you in the States, but here in Peru you would pay around $500-$600 for a new board. http://www.klimaxsurf.com/home_ingles.html

My advice is, if you're a beginner, get a 2nd hand longboard and then when you're satisfied with your skills, buy a new one.

Perhaps I need to brush up on my idea of longboarding.

It seems that you guys are referencing surfing...what I had in mind was the longer (surf shaped) skateboards for street riding...

Should I be usign a different term? I've always known them as longboards...

Nah dude, you're using the right term. I was refering to longboarding as well... but I was making notice of my limited knowledge on the subject since I only surf with boards of around 6 feet, while longboarding requires boards of 9 feet up 8-)
  • longboarding is great. i live in south florida and traffic can get crazy, so i've used my board to take quick easy trips around to the drug store and whatnot. a lot of your board will be personal preference. for instance, my friends back home in NH use theirs to ride hills and feel way more comfortable with pretty much the longest longboards out there. i use mine for cruising, and mine is a mini-longboard. it's dimensions are similar to that of a skateboard, but it rides smooth like a longboard. i would suggest going to a store and trying some out. you'll also be able to adjust the trucks/wheels on them to fit you, once you find out how comfortable you are and how fast you'll want to take turns. i don't know too much about them, seeing as i just use it for cruising, but just going into a board shop and feeling out a few definitely worked. good luck!
i've been in my mind, it's such a fine line...

Thanks bro, that is basically what I was looking for. I've done some snowboarding and with that, you want to get your board length according to heighth, which i assumed was the same concept here.

I'll go into a store and try it out. I'd mainly be using it for the same reason you do 8-). We've got good hills here in SLC...but I know that I'm far from growing the balls to bomb one of those suckers.

I'll just stick to the giant, empty parkign lots :D

    whats up...

i longboard a lot, and its very fun. Set ups usually run around 150-200. a very good beginner set up is one from krackedskulls.com i have it and its good. Also check out silverfishlongboarding.com ...it has some nice forums and you'll be able to get a better, more detailed answer from them. Anyways, i would recommend the kracked skulls, and also Gravity and Surf One.

    peace

Oops! It appears that you were right and we were indeed refering to different subjects! I had no idea that the term "longboarding" applied to skateboarding with long boards. Here we call those boards "Gravity" because that's pretty much the only boards we get in Peru.

    My bad!

Thanks everyone, this has really helped me out. Soon I'll be riding a...concrete wave? It works, I guess.

I have one. Use it to get from place to place occasionally. Mines a sector 9, the ex had a Dregs.
I don't remember the lengths on them... I do know mines a bit longer then his was. They both ride really smooth, though I prefer mine :D

Good luck. Find a good skate shop and they'll help you pick the best for you.

I have a Sector 9. It's shorter and more flexible than some of the others. I believe it's the Cosmic Series. It's not as stable at super high speeds, but turns very well and is easier to control.

It worked well for Skating the Avenues in SLC.

They are easier to ride... but, harder to paddle out on. They are stable and slow and are fun because you can get long rides on them.
I don't know if the sponges are easier than the old school boards... but, I'm guessing they are easier.

I used to have a circa 1974 6'6" Rik... then, a 1977 6'4" Hannifin... both got ripped off in fucking Orange County. My latest is a 6'4" no-name. It's okay... but, i haven't been out in a while. I got a fucked up shoulder and the water here is fucking toxic.
