What causes the static sound on a record player?

I have a Numark PT-01 record player... it's new got it over the summer, but when I put TEN on.. it has a bad cracking, static sound. Can it be that the record is a bit dusty?

And I have it hooked up to my computer speakers, I know.. not so Audiphile-esque.. but w.e. lol..
