Too mainstream??

For lack of better words, "mainstream". Now, I will be the first to admit, I love too see as much PJ stuff on TV/magazines/radio but, am I alone when I say there has been a HUGE explosion of Pearl Jam lately? Every where I look I see or hear the name Pearl Jam. I have people calling me every 10 minutes to say they just saw something on TV about the band or read an article in a magazine, some of which I havent spoken to in months or even years... And now, with this Rock band thing, Im kinda thinking its getting outta control (coming from somene who hasnt played a "video game" since Excite Bike on Nintendo). I definitely have mixed emotions about all the publicity... Your thoughts???

  • I agree that it's getting a little out of hand. But hey it's their call, and if they want it this way then let em have it. They've been out of the spotlight long enough, and they've clearly missed it. So it's all good with me as long as the music on the next album is up to par with their musicianship and not some attempt to be big again.

I have no idea what you're talking about.
The only new PJ-anything that has entered the mainstream that I'm aware of is the release of Brother. I live in (or near) one of the largest cities in the country (in Phoenix) and travel at least twice a week for and I hear nothing PJ related other than the occasional PJ Brother talk. That is it.

What you are talking about is beyond me...

Oh, and what does Rockband mean to anyone or anything? Every other large group in the world has gone to Rockband/Guitar Hero.
I know people like to think of PJ as some sort of pseudo-non-mainstream-"our own band" kinda thing, but too often people forget to realize that they are one of the most popular bands in the world (relatively ;))...to this day.
Putting Ten on Rockband means nothing to me. Get over it.

Im sure the new album will be awesome reguardless! This has been an exciting month, almost as exciting as getting a tour announcement. But, I almost prefer where things were at just a few months ago...

As long as you weren't one of those who was upset with Comeback being on Friday Night Lights, or Ledbetter being on Friends.
My god, I still remember the firestorm that occurred from that!!
    :D
Hundreds of PJ fans everywhere throwing out all of their flannel shirts in disgust only to go to the next 3 shows 5 months later in their area.

PJ is my favorite band, and PJ fans are the best...but some people (met many over the years) make one take a step back and think "Wow, these people need to get over themselves and chill the F out".

Very true. Just seems that the boys wouldn't have agreed to all this in the past. A bit overwhelming IMO.

HAHA! I may be too young for that mix. Im also not too cultured when it comes to music these days as I have a different PJ boot in the CD player daily ( heavily rotated ). Spin that shit!:lol:

Yeah, I mean, if too many people hear of Pearl Jam, how will we think of ourselves as cool and better than everyone else?

Come on. A bit of hype around a rerelease is hardly shooting PJ to huge heights of fame.

As long as they don't start selling PJ t-shirts at Target like they sell Ramones, Beatles t-shirts at Target here.

If this all gets more people re-visiting or discovering Pearl Jam, I"m all for it. Maybe it will crowd out some of the other bad quality 'music' that's out there.

I'd be happy if this attracts new fans.
A lot of people don't realize how great this band is because they don't know their music.

  • I for one LOVE IT.... not mainstream at all its everywhere now but one month from now all gone. I think after this wave is about to crash throw a date for the new album and tour. Right now all eyes are on PJ BEST TIME IN THE WORLD TO PROMOTE NEW ALBUM while they have the worlds attention.....Just my opinion.

  • I of the vein of thinking that if one or two more people take this exposure and follow it into perhaps listening to Yield, or Binaural, or No Code, or Avacado... well, then it's awesome. And, hell, I just finished watching the VH-1 thing... and I enjoyed every minute of it... took me back to that time in my life.

I'm more or less of the belief that I can never have enough PJ....

I love all the attention that Pearl Jam is getting right now. It is good to see them back in the spotlight. The more I hear about them the more excited I get for this new album!

Good to see most of the reply's here are for the spread of the Music we all love.

I have never been one to talk about 'selling out'. I mean isn't the goal of a band to get their art out to as many people as they can AND make a living doing that.

I love that the band has principles. But these principles have changed and grown and even shrunk in some cases over the years as the band matures/gets older.

Nothing would make me happier than to see the next record explode to the levels of Vs.

Imagine all the good that that would do for the radio and the many of the kids out there who are force fed the Jonas Brothers and all that crap out there.

    Market that shit!

  • Yeah, stop and listen to the "Rock" radio stations for a couple minutes... I mean, how in the heck do we expect today's youth to develop any decent taste in music when this is the crap that are getting exposed to...

I say more PJ for everyone, and the world would be a better place...

  • What's wrong with the mainstream spot light? I think that's what they are gearing towards anyways. They were once the ultimate mainstream. The band is mature enough to handle the media and seems to embrace it with more enjoyment now. If anything, it enhances the band's image to today's mainstream media and listeners. I am all for it. I Hope PJ make a shit load of money and gain thousands of new fans and re inspire older ones.

I think that they have been out of the spotlight for a long time and if they want to stick their foot back out there than I think they have the right to. I don't think their artistic merits or integrity deserves to be questioned regarding this rerelease thing.

This dumb argument again? Yawn. Anytime this band does anything, some fan who has an idea of what Pearl Jam should be (in their own minds) starts the whole "too mainstream" argument. Like someone said earlier, if PJ gets too mainstream how are we to think of ourselves as better and too cool for the popular music?

i mentioned in another thread that PJ is indeed making a Green Day-esque come back. the only difference is that this time it's with a good band lol :P...but their neo mainstream success is all dependent on this new album and how well it does and how close it is to their ten/vs. days.

Considering the last one didnt do much, and it was supposed to be back to original form, i doubt this one will. I hope this isnt going to be another Avocado album. (even though I love that album) I hope its going to be a Yield mixed with a little No Code album.

I have a good feeling its going to have the energy of yield, and experimentation from No Code. EXCEPT, the experimentation will be more poppy (but in a good way). RS said Matt Cameron wrote a song that could almost be seen on a KOL record. I am really excited for that, since I recently got into KOL, Black Keys, those type of bands. Bring it on PJ

edit: got off topic..... I personally think the only reason they are acting like they give a shit about there past is because they went YEARS without doing any remasters, greatest hits (execpt one) and all that. So its obvious Sony is making them do it. So I guess they figured they might as well do it with a bang. And they are hardly getting more mainstream, im sure it will help, but not much. I personally like this stuff they are doing. The only one I think is cheesy is the whole "ten" on rockband crap.

the exposure they received in the early 90s is completely different than now. Back then, they were constantly being pulled in every direction and people were tryin to get everything they could from PJ. It was just a feeding frenzy and probably was overwhelming for them.

I'm sure that the band feels more comfortable promoting themselves now in their own way.
