Anyone ever start their own business? Or know somebody who did?
I'm starting to seriously consider it. I know its certainly not a great time BUT then again many have also told me this is when entrepreneurs come out.

being an entrepreneur in a time like this is great, depending on what it is....being someone who's got a business-head and will put in the hours that being self-employed demands, that will be the bigger part. what kind of business?

Yeah, what kind of business? My husband ran his own business for a while, started from nothing. Pretty stressful in the beginning.
  • Thanks for responses.
Yea not the best time to look for capital etc...but im reading a lot regarding entrepreneurs starting in this economy. Anyway...to be VERY vague an old college buddy & I have started to spin the wheels on a new music entertainment business. Looking to start smaller and probably on a local level then try to expand. That's about all i can say about the business being that we have so many different ideas that we have yet to nail down the true mission as to what the company does. It will be different though. Not re-inventing the wheel. But unique.

Be prepared to work HARD. I own and run a small fitness center. Be prepared to do EVERYTHING related to your business, and never expect anyone who works for you to do something you wouldn't do. I teach classes, I make center equipment purchases, I train new instructors, I keep my books, I designed posters and flyers, AND I clean toilets and wash floors when necessary. I shovel snow. You have to WANT to succeed and be prepared to put lots and lots of energy and hours in to make yourself profitable. I am, but I earn every penny fairly. Be sure you're healthy. You can't afford to start something if you're going to fall sick. NO ONE cares for your business like you, the owner. If you're working with a partner, as you indicate, be sure to spell everything out in writing. You may be friends now, but misunderstandings can happen when 2 people make different assumptions about the same thing because they didn't communicate enough. Have a lawyer help you write out some type of mutual agreement in terms of who does what, how many hours each is expected to put in, and how profits and expenses are to be shared. Consider whether you want to be sole proprietors or a limited liability company. There, that's a few things to think about!

I own a retail art gallery and frame shop that I established 7 years ago. I grew up in the business working in my family's gallery/frame shop. Been over 20 years since I started in the business, with other ambitions in between.

It's very rewarding, but you have to have a certain personality type to run certain businesses. ...you'll never be fired, but you can lose your shirt if you don't know what you're doing, or if luck is not with you. If you're starting a retail business from scratch (depending on the business) you'll need a bankroll of six figures at least. If you're starting up another business like the painter mentioned above, you'll probably need just a few thousand to start. It's all very specific to what you are doing.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Im trying to do an Ebay business thing. I just started going to estate sales buying old antiques cheap and selling them on Ebay. Today is my first day. I went to a estate sell this morning to buy a clock but they wanted over 3500.00 for it. I had 100.00 in my pocket. I left.
    I'll be back

my parents did, quite successful...my oldest sister still has the business going, albeit on a much smaller scale. my mother also has had 2 or 3 businesses on her own - a shop and an accountancy business. it is a LOT of work. you will work harder and longer, but it IS all for yourself. however, depending if you have employees of not, that can add a lot to your costs, maintaining inventory, knowing and wooing your clients, etc. absolutely there can be a lot of risk...so do prepare yourself adequately. depending on what type of work you do and what field you're in will greatly affect your start-up costs, degree of risk, work involved, insurance, etc, etc. think long and hard about what you truly WANT from your own business, plan thoroughly, save, save, save....and good luck! :)
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow
