Eddie Vedder: 'Kurt would like me if he was still alive'

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder has said he imagines Kurt Cobain would think he "turned out OK" if he were still alive today, despite the Nirvana frontman lambasting the band throughout their career.

Cobain famously slated Pearl Jam for "Pioneering a corporate, alternative and cock-rock fusion", though the two frontmen did reconcile privately before Cobain's death in 1994.

Speaking to The Sun, Vedder said that although he and Cobain didn't see eye-to-eye, he hoped the iconic frontman would have still been his friend.

"If Kurt were around today, I know he'd say to me, 'Well, you turned out OK,'" he said.

Vedder also revealed that Pearl Jam's rehearsal space is a shrine to rock and roll, containing Johnny Ramone's baseball card and photo collection, alongside personal snaps of Kings Of Leon playing the game dressed in full regalia.

Obviously Ed does. Even as rivals, there was a bond between them and as friends, something stronger.

I would even say that I'm kinda disappointed that he would bring this up in an interview. Kurt Cobain has proven himself to be an unstable pussy, who gives a fuck what he thinks or potentially would think about him. He was stoned and bitter when he said those things about Eddie.

My god! How old am i if some of these newbies were not born in the early 90's! That is some crazy s***! It feels like yesterday when 90210 was on tv, Jurassic Park was in the theaters, and Pearl Jam/Nirvana were on top of the world. Good times!
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.

I'm 18, and LOVE Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Every once in a while, I wonder what the big deal is about Nirvana. Then I play Unplugged for the hundreth time, and I go into a phase again!
  • Other than Dave Grohl Nirvana was terrible. Such sloppy musicianship and Cobain couldn't sing worth a tinker's damn.

I have to agree with you 100% on that! Dave Grohl was the only good thing to come out of that band.

i love how some of you uninformed fools dare to call me a noob. i may not be in my 30's, but i've been a fan since like 93 and i've never really been a fan of nirvana...i always thought kurt was too into his image and using the media to cultivate it. nirvana's music (outside of the unplugged, which i still enjoy) never really did much for me...its simple and formulaic. if axl rose was one side of the spectrum, kurt was the other...same bullshit, different clothes.

and i'm not gonna make this a dick measuring contest, but to those of you who felt the need to call me a noob, how many shows have you seen?

  • Thank God the "grunge" era is dead. I only wish Kurt could have lived to see it collapse. I think he would have gone on to do some great stuff. He would have loved Vitalogy and No Code, and would probably have thought twice about Pearl Jam after those albums. He would have been too busy bitching about Creed and N'sync by '98 anyways.
I'm not too concerned with PJ20, because I celebrate the band's existence every year.
