Popular vs. Critical Acclaim?

The perception of the band "seems" to be that they garner "critical acclaim" by those who review music, but are only "popular" amongst we die-hard fans.
Would you rather see the band popular with more people or critically received by media types?
Personally, I don't care either way. I just enjoy the music and appreciate the band for who they are. But it seems that some people have the urge for the masses to understand the band like we do and/or be critically admired by the media.
