Want to get a record player...

But my Sony hi-fi doesn't have an aux port so I can't plug the record player in.
Most of the record players I see online plug into AUX ports on hi-fi's.
Anyone know how to go about solving this problem, is there an adaptor you can purchase???
I really need to work this out otherwise I can't/won't get super deluxe :(
I just bought my hi-fi 2 yrs ago dammit, I can't believe I didn't notice, assumed they all have them.

I am definitely not an expert and am learning all this myself (I am sure there are people here that are much more suited to answer this in detail) however if your receiver doesn't have a "PHONO" input, my understanding is that unless your turntable has a phono preamp, you will need one before connecting to an auxiliary input on your stereo system - when you ask about adapters, what other inputs does your system have in the back?

Some newer record players have a pre-amp built in so that you can plug it directly into the AUX input on your reciever. However, most audiophiles would tell you to steer clear of these players. If the player doesn't have a built in pre-amp you will need to buy one for the sound to properly play through the AUX input of your reciever. The records will play without a pre-amp but the sound would be so low even when turned all the way up.

Happy that my pre-amp was delivered today :D

  • I bought a cheap pre-amp from Radio Shack (runs on 9 volts) that works fine.

    Here's a similar one:

The real vinyl experts will tell you to buy a tube pre-amp but unless you have hundreds of dollars lying around your house (and you're also a huge nerd) solid state is fine.

demetrios, when I was little I had the same exact player.

I used to listed to a Sesame Street Gold album almost daily. That was the greatest.

Anyways, what is a good turntable to buy? I am in the market. My Sony surround sound has an aux port.

    Nothing
On the front it has a port for mp3 players, that is all.
It's a 2 yr old Sony mini hifi.
