    A) You don't know who Merle Haggard is?

    B) what do you mean, figured it out? What does Merle Haggard have to do with the cassette tape?

    :?

Here is a Copy and paste from another thread I posted in regarding the Ten Super Deluxe Edition:

Alright I listened to the Momma Son tape. It has three tracks Alive, Once, and Footsteps. All I can say is Stone and Jeff must have been freaking out when they got it!
Alive - Is about 85% the same other than a few lyrics here and there.
Once - Is about 35% the same Ed talks alot during this version and a few lyrics are different.
Footsteps - Is about 95% the same just a few lyrical differences.

Just to give you a heads up I confirmed there is no side B so you don't need to waste you time there.
The tape itself is pretty cool I'd like to know what tape it was originally that Ed recorded over. On the top of the tape where it would normally list the songs Ed whited out all but "A friend from California" on the bottom every thing is whited out too except the letters that spell " Ed Die".

laughs, I listened to the b-side also wondering if there would be a secret nugget there.

I have had the mp3's of both, the original music only version, and the 3 songs Ed wrote and sang lyrics too and sent back to Seattle.

My favorite part about having the pre-vocals and post vocals recordings is being able to hear someone sneeze in the pre-vocals recording at the beginning of Footsteps, and when Ed was recording his newly written lyrics over the music, he says "bless you" to who ever it was that sneezed.

And I don't think it says "Ed Die" as much as it just says "Eddie."

Awww, and I get your theory on Merle Haggard. You think that maybe Ed recorded over a Merle Haggard tape to make the tape he sent back to Stone and Jeff.

Technical question: So Ed receives this tape with instrumental demos on it. How does one go about "overdubbing" lyrics/singing onto the tape without erasing the instrumentals? What I mean is, with a standard tape player, if you hit record you will be erasing what's already there. Obviously, there are recording devices with this capability, but I'm just curious if someone could provide some insight as to the process. Or am I just forgetting something simple? Thanks.

He could have used the original tape to play it whilst recording on another.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.

Very true. I just got to thinking about this after hearing some of the recent interviews. I just can't picture him recording on another tape and then having Stone and Jeff get back two tapes in the mail and having to listen to them simultaneously...do you see what I'm saying? I mean it's possible...

Eddie likely used a 4 track.
Transfered the instrumentals onto his 4 track , recorded his vocals, put the two together, and the rest was history.

It's so cool to have a replica of this tape!!

I was thinking that it wasn't possible to record on a tape that he bought, ie the Merle Haggard one. Remember there was the little square on the top of the tape that when it was opened, you couldn't record it anymore? Then I remembered that we would put a piece of tape over that hole, so maybe that's what Ed did.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense at all!

Makes total sense. Did it many, many, many times during the age of cassette. :)
E agora? Faz xixi na mão e deita fora!

But if he played the original tape while singing, the new tape would record his voice AND the original tape that was playing.
