New Record Player Problems

I have a refurbished technics turntable, just bought from a good indy vinyl store. I hooked it up to my component system, and the volume seems WAY low. Like I turn the volume all the way up (to 30) and it's just a comfortable listening volume at full blast. Do I need a preamp in addition to this to boost the signal, or is this defective? All other components sound louder at 1/3 the volume (at 10)?

you need a preamp, turntables of that age didn't come with a preamp because all receivers had built in preamps for turntables, but once the turntable became obsolete companies quit putting preamps in their receivers, which is why now most turntable have built in preamps.

make sure you spend some quality money on a preamp and make sure it is designed for specifically turntables or else your next issue will be a lack of bass.

I second that. It's likely that your receiver doesn't have an actual phono jack.

This is what I was looking for!!

I have a receiver, but there is no place for my turntable in that same room (long, boring story). I want to set the turntable up in the most cost effective way.

I'd rather not get another receiver and speakers separately, as I know I'll end up spending way more than I really want to.

If I go with a shelf system, and a quality preamp, will that do the trick?

If you spend maybe $20 or $30 on a "phono preamp", you'll be good as gold, as long as it's the volume that's your problem. Their advice was correct! I think RadioShack and Guitar Center offered one. I either bought it there or at Best Buy (maybe) or online. I forget now.

  • you know, when i first got into vinyl and bought a turntable i had one of those compact sony stereo's with the 5.1 sound capabilities n' shit. no phono input so i bought a pre-amp for it and honestly, it was still lacking BIG TIME. there was also a "buzz" sound because i didn't have a proper way to connect the ground wire from the turntable.

my solution was to buy one of those old pioneer receivers from the '70's. the sx-737 to be exact. affordable and PERFECT solution to the sound problems. throw in some decent floor speakers and you're set. first record i put on was nirvana's "in utero" and i was blown away.

    enjoy!

I saw quite a few of those beasts on Craig's List!! For a reason I cannot explain, I am strongly attracted to them.
