u2 or pearl jam?

and why

i think that at this moment for the prices of the material and the free website that pearl jam have the lead even with less years making albums.

i think that when nirvana moved a certain visual out of the way of the youth the music was tight. but i think the good music was there the machine just wasnt looking to change it had to be broken into.

definitely Pearl Jam. U2 has been far too inconsistent in their music. They put up some huge stink bombs in the mid-point of their career. Whole albums with maybe 1 good song on it.

I've seen Pearl Jam sixty-eight times . I've seen Pearl Jam on five continents. I 've done this because I always feel like I'm seeing the band for the first time. Sixty-eight shows one time each. Can't wait to add to the total.

I've seen U2 forty times. Enough to know that I don't really care if I see them in concert again. I just don't feel the same magic. The last time I saw U2 , the best thing about the show was that PJ opened. The time before that , Bruce Springsteen joined them for an encore of "People Get Ready " in Philly and Damien "Jr. Gong" Marley opened. The sameness of the setlists over the three shows I saw on the Vertigo tour had me thinking " Pearl Jam would never do this" .

I would say the stink bombs are the adult contemporary crap they are putting out late in their career.. they put out some good shit in the 90s..
  • U2's music always came off as generic to me. I like it, don't get me wrong, but aside form the hits, I can't get into much else they've done.

  • I love U2, and the Edge will always be a huge influence on my guitar playing, but I have to go with Pearl Jam because their music has always meant more to me. There's more there for me to relate to, and they always get me energized. Plus, they made No Code and Yield, and they are all super bad asses.

They're both great bands in their own way.

I don't fault U2 for similar setlists each night - their show production is much more complicated and elaborate and doesn't allow for a lot of variation. ZooTV was the best stadium show ever and I could have watched the same setlist for the whole tour.

As for fan loyalty, U2.com isn't as good as TenClub. But it's pretty close despite the Vertigo ticket fiasco. I just renewed and am getting a free double CD of the Slane Castle show - great stuff, as someone else said.

I know U2 has had some unpopular albums, but I respect their willingness to test the boundaries. Just look at the arc from Joshua Tree to Achtung Baby to Pop to ATYCLB. Not just your average formula band.

Some of you may think that Bono is a poser, but I'd still like to have a pint with him.

True. Saw it four times. Amazing.

U2 is a great band. So is Pearl Jam.

Bono was Time magazine's person of the year a couple years ago. Hard to be a poser and "douche" and land on the cover for what he did -- and does. I have a lot of respect for his story and willingness to use his fame for good.

The same could be said for Eddie, without the Time cover.

Pearl Jam has opened up for U2 in Europe and Hawaii. They're pals. They have shown up at each other's shows.

What's the point of this thread, really?

Two great bands. One opens for the other. One has one album that appears consistently on all the all-time greatest album lists, the other has three or four that consistently appear on the same list.

One is in the Rock Hall of Fame. One is headed there.

One is largely considered the biggest band in the world. The other, sadly, usually causes people to scratch their heads and say, "are they still making music."

I love both bands. Both are great.

U2 got me through high school, awakened my political soul, taught me to seek out genuine rock and roll; Pearl Jam through college, graduate school and young adulthood; then U2 spoke to me in fatherhood, while Pearl Jam's tour of 06 took me back to my youth. I'll be 40 next year.

But let's take a reality check here.

Besides, I'm mor eof a Radiohead fan these days.

Actually Eddie already did that in, I believe, 93' for an article about grunge, he may not have been person of the year, but he was still on there.

No, I'm talking Person of the Year, in context to someone calling him a douche. If we're counting Time covers: Bono 4 (1987, 1993, 2001, 2005) and Eddie 1.

    Again, reality check.

Seems like many of the choices for Pearl Jam are based on hate of Bono rather than any music the two bands have produced.

    Stupid thread.
