Excuse my ignorance but i need 2 know, were the name Pearl Jam derives from?
I heard many years ago that ed picked it from his mothers name 'Pearl 'is this true?
thanks.......
I think Jeff Ament came up with the idea after they went and saw Neil Young Jam on stage. Didn't Neil young also have a car that said "pearl 10" on it or something?
The thing Eddie said about his grandmas jam was just stories for the press I believe.
"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"
Jeff, Stone & Eddie went to a Neil Young concert and saw him jamming...and that is where they got the name Jam from...Jeff came up with "Pearl" and I guess they liked the initials PJ and that is where the name came from...the story about Eddie's great grandma Pearl's hallucengenic jam was a lie.
The way I look at it is: Pearl Jam, Mans "jam" is a pearl-ish color therfore Pearl Jam = Sperm. Which in turn = Life. So Pearl Jam = LIFE.... Pffffff fuck I need sleep
The story is Jeff liked the word Jam as stated above, then they threw out words to go with it and all settled on Pearl.
Now on the old pit the real answer was given in my opinion, but you will never get this officially.
Pearl Jam came from Mother Love Bone.
Get it. Good. Yeah they were immature and sophmoric, but so were we all at one time. They just happened to be that way when they were deciding on a name after being upset about being told they had to give up the name Mookie Blaylock.
There's a recent video interview with Jeff and he says that they would Jam, and then they were at a coffee shop in Seattle and they saw the word 'Pearl' and then they put the 2 togther.
A child's rhyme stuck in my head...
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.

I'm 100% convinced they made that story up so they could wriggle out of being called vulgar and immature.
Pearl Jam is semen, and furthermore, Pearl Jam came from Mother Love Bone.

one of the guys said in an interview that they liked the word "Pearl" because it was a symbol of cast-off/waste that was turned into something beautiful (pearls are made from oyster secretions right?)
cant remember which one said that...but in the context of why the band was formed (Andy's death) they thought it was good. maybe I imagined this all?

Yep. It makes sense, is rather poetic and insightful when you really think about it, and on top of that is pretty hilarious.
