Family First ?

I want opinions on this one...

My Father-in-Law has tickets to the Phillies Home Opener that he won from a lottery

I talked to him over thr weekend and he said he's not going to the game and said he wants to sell the tickets, so I asked him if I can buy them and he said $100 a piece for tickets that are around $35 I think face value

He said he's putting them up on Stubhub for $150 a piece

I was a little surprised considering I am married to his daughter that he would try to make money off of me

I said they're your tickets and you can do what you want with them...but if they don't sell for what you want I'm not taking them for face value off you

Anyone have this ever happen with family ?

I'm sorry...he paid for the tickets like $80 for 2

He's trying to get at least $200 back

I don't begrudge the guy for trying to make money from a stranger...I thought if he knew I wanted them I would get them for face value

He has a 17 game plan also...so he can't be hurting too much for money

couldn't have said it better myself. that's pretty messed up. but they are his tickets and he can do/sell them for whatever he wants.

edit--just saw your next post. face value seems more than fair here.

I know..I'm not asking for free tickets

I think he's pissed because no one went in on his 17 game plan...which at the time I didn't have the money to put down for those tickets

It's his right to sell them for whatever he thinks he can get and it's your right not to buy them for what he's asking. Family is family, but does he really owe you anything? I'm not saying you shouldn't be annoyed (I would be too) but keep it in perspective.

Yeah...she at first was on his side of course its her Dad

I told her he's being a dick and you can't justify trying to rip-off family

She sees my point and agrees...I dont want her to get involved its not that big of deal I was just surprised

definitely your best move. good to hear ur wife sees both sides, and thats another reason to leave it alone. but you are right, he is being a bit of a dick - to the poster above who said its his perogative to do what he wants is true, but its also his perogative to be a dick about it!!

anyways, Speedys right, dont get involved, and dont bring it up again. only thing worse than being subjected to that kind of stuff is to retort to it in anyway.

Guess it depends on what kind of a relationship you have with him. I have the kind with mine that if he didnt just GIVE me the tickets, I would call him out on it. "Not my fault you cant go, give me the damn tickets! You dont need the $$ anyhow!!" hahaha....:-)

I think it's best to leave it alone. I totally see both sides of the argument and if the Phils didn't win the World Series and weren't raising the banner that night those tickets wouldn't be in such demand and he'd probably give you the tix.

It's just that the circumstances are not usual so I can see why he wants to make some money on the tickets.

Yeah, the tickets never went on sale to the general public. You had to win a lottery to be able to buy tickets to the game. That game along with the Red Sox series are the hardest tickets to get this year for the Phillies.

Definitely a dick move trying to scalp tickets to your family.

It's one thing if you have like $100 tickets and you want to cover what you paid, but it's $80 for two tickets... just give them to your family members, or at the very most charge them face value.

What I want to know is why did your father in law enter the lottery if he doesn’t want to go to opening day of the champion Philadelphia Phillies? Was his intent all along to sell them?

I know people that entered that lottery and would kill to go to that game.

Now they have to pay some jack ass scalper in order to do so.

That kind of shit pisses me off big time.

As far as your situation, he should sell them to you at face value. Apparently, his intent all along was to make a buck off of this.

Agreed... I've given away my spare ticket to rugby matches before to family and friends... that I could have actually got well over 1000 for (according to the papers). It's just something I could never bring myself to do... it's robbery and, if you're a true fan, you just don't do this... never mind doing this to family! I tried to bring myself to see his reasoning but I'm sorry it DOES make him a dick.
