Enlarging a Photo

Lots of folks are talking about this kind of thing so I have a question. If any of you are photography or computer freaks I need help please. I found an image on line that I want to blow up to a huge poster. It is from Drop in the Park and it's only 335 X 500 pixels. I am wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to get a huge picture with special software voodoo magic? Or if anyone has a similar image with higher resolution?????

I would it to be large poster sized.

Thanks

The image will become pixelated but you could check out Rasterbator just google it...

I've used it in the past and it works well and most things turn out pretty sick looking.
  • Grr... Just have someone scan it on the board. Make a hi-res scan of the pic and you can blow it up. If you send me the pic when you get it I can blow it up for you. I could even direct you where to go to get a poster made of it.
  • sorry... For some reason I was assuming you meant the vinyl. If someone has this pic in a book it could be scanned and blown up.

to assume only makes an ass out of u and me... but it was mostly me that time.

In order to scan it, you need a physical copy. If all you have is this image online, then as you make it bigger, the more pixelated it will become. If you take this image and try to print it on a full sheet of photopaper (8.5x11) you'll probably get a somewhat passable image, but pixilated. If you try to blow up any further, it'll look horrible.

The photographer is Lance Mercer. I'd google "Lance Mercer" to see if the image is in his photography books - or someone on The Porch can look it up for you in one of their LM books. It is illegal to scan and reproduce and a place like Kinkos would be unlikely to help you with that, but that is how you would do it. You'll end up still getting a somewhat grainy blow-up because each pixel would be blown up pretty big. You can also try to track down Lance Mercer and email to see if he would offer it as a one-time giclee print on canvas or paper though that would probably cost hundreds.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)

Thanks for the info. I am going to drop Mercer a line and see what the damages might be.

There is a larger one available on flickr. It is 2010x3000. Click on the All Sizes button at the top left of the image.

Thank you, I never even noticed that. I don't use Flickr very much. I'll post a picture of the finished product framed.

The largest one is only about 8x10. The image is 300 dpi so you can scale that to about 12x18 and have it at around 150dpi and it will still look good.

I am a photographer so I can help you out...

I just grabbed the larger of the images on flickr 2010 x 3000 copied it... came out to be
    17.3 meg
    Width - 27.917 inches
    Height - 41.667 inches
    Resolution - 72dpi

    I converted it to

    99.4 megs
    Width - 16.08
    Height - 24
    Resolution - 300dpi

Now I was able to push it up to a 36x24 but it may not work for printing.. I could do a test print and let you know. My printer at home does 19x44 prints. This photo is a black and white with some grain in it but the Pixels look okay to me. Again, once you star blowing images up they lose quality regardless(and he shot this with a 35mm and was handholding it).
Thats a lovely accent you have. New Jersey?

Wow, you are very kind and helpful. I have been trying to figure out how to go about this for some time. I don't know how to convert the image like you did. I do have access to large formet printers so I can get it printed if I have a file. Can you please teach me how to convert it? 24X36 would be a perfect size. If you help me out and we can get a decent looking print I will make one for you and send it if you like.
    Thank you
