Good tips on Kayaking the San Juan Islands?

Going out at the beginning of June to see my sister and her family and wanted to do some kayaking. I will be renting all my stuff (maybe bring my PFD). Any info on a good rental place or a good tour? So far I saw the Anacortes tours. Not too bad, about $60 for a three hour or $99 for 5 hour tour. Or is it just better to rent and wing it?
I'll be in Mukilteo, right near the ferry. I can probably do a walk on and go to any of the islands too.

Thanks in advance!!

Hiya Fifth! I'm there for only 5 days and they seem to be filled with lots of family visits and all that. Will be sure to let you know if I make it that far up...Been hoping there will be some kind of announcement and I can luck out on a show! Maybe Stone or Mike at the Showbox or something....I have a few months still! Fingers crossed!

Whale watching there is awesome! We went and there were Kayakers that had Orcas swimming all around them, it looked like a blast! Have a great trip....I love that area.
