I recently decided to listen to some Jar of Flies, and Mad Season the other day. I found it pretty hard to do. I can't listen to that music anymore, its just way too depressing IMO. Lately I have been listening to alot more positive (hippie) music. I find it much more enjoyable just chillin out blasting some Phish, Tea Leaf Green, Sky Blue Sky, or just about anything from PJ. I just cant do depressing music anymore. I used to listen to AIC all the time, not anymore. Anyone else find it hard to listen to that type of stuff.

Seriously, wouldn't you rahter listen to something that makes you happy, and not sad?

I find I cry a lot more listening to it, hearing all these later (AIC/Mad Season) how prophetic things turned out to be.

if i listen to depressing music when i'm sad it only makes it worse, same thing with sad movies. i'm careful with what i listen to when i'm a low mood.

Thats how I am. I don't understand how people listen to sad music when they are sad. For some it helps them, for me it just makes things alot worse.

One thing I love about PJ is that they turned their more sad songs into happier songs live. Black studio, and YLB studio sound depressing, but live they sound alot more positive.

yeah, i think when i listen to sad music when i'm in the same state, it just resonates too much and i end up feeling worse too. i can appreciate it for what it is more when i'm separated from it.

PJ has some seriously uplifting music, there have been many moments where i've been down that just the right PJ song has helped soothe my soul. good stuff :)

I just depends what kind of mood I'm in. I can listen to sad music when I'm sad but it kind of depends on what I'm sad about. I think stuff like AIC is great if I'm just not having a good day. One of those nothing has gone right kind of days. Just reminds me that things could be a whole lot worse. If I am really upset about something, like if someone died, I could never turn that stuff on. I'm in a low enough place as it is so I don't want to come down harder.

I find a lot of lugubrious music a bit silly. I hear Joy Division and I start putting on the 16rpm frog voice that Ian Curtis had and taking the piss out of the whole thing. I hear Leonard Cohen and I start making noises like a vacuum cleaner. I've even been known to improvise dirty lyrics to Black Eyed Dog by Nick Drake. I guess I'm just a chirpy fella.

What's so depressing about Mad Season? "Lifeless Dead"? It's a double negative and cancels out all of the negativity.

aaaaaahaahaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Lifeless Dead! it's a happy tune... laugh and sing along!

happy music gets on my tits after listening to it too much!

alto i agree that early SG and Alice in Chains can be a bit much.

if its got rhythm then im all over it like a whore on crack. PJs got rhythm, Radioheads got rhythm. lots of other people tell me their music is depressing tho. ah well.

Just because something has a depressing lyrical content, it means that it makes the listener sad? I don't know about most people, but when I listen to Jar Of Flies, it makes me happy, because it's a f'ing great album and I love the music.

As I saw someone else saying, when I have felt down, listening to music that most consider to be depressing doesn't really help the situation.

Obviously its different for everyone. If I listen to depressing music, i start feeling depressed. I mean pretty depressing music though. Alot of AIC songs are fine, but a select few i cant do. Coincidently, the entire JOF album is too depressing for me, except for No Excuses and maybe I Stay Away.

  • I LOVE DEPRESSING MUSIC!!!

And it's important to note, that in general I'm a very happy person!

I mean there are times when I prefer more upbeat non-depressing tunes, but if the time is right, there's nothing better than a wicked sad song!

I feel the same way, but maybe with a few less exclamation points. :)

i really cant stand happy music, i just dont get it. depressed music seems more sincere to me. if youre all happy with a girl, then be with her dont write some song about how great she is, tell her. but if she broke your heart youre home alone what else is there to do but talk to your guitar? you cant tell her, cause she doesnt care, its her fault. so you write a song. that makes sense to me.

I guess I do listen to a lot of depressing music not that i would characterize it as such. I just think it's realistic.

I would argue that Pearl Jam has some pretty depressing music at times. Sure, they turn a lot of that stuff into positives. Or there is a thread of positivity in an otherwise negative song (Daughter). I think that is really what made them unique in the "grunge" (hate that word) era. If AIC had written RVM then the guy woudn't have driven away at the end, or if he did, he would have hit a bridge abutment somewhere along the way.

They are not on the same level as Nirvana, AIC, etc., but they do have some pretty downer songs that aren't positive at all.

lol..that's the best i can describe it. I listen to the smiths and morrissey a lot and i know people think it's depressing as hell. I just think he sees things as they really are. But yeah Im sure I am jaded :P
