Over the weekend two British soldiers were shot dead by real IRA dissidents when they went to the gates of their barracks to collect a pizza. The Pizza delivery man was shot too, but not killed.
It's been 12 years since a British soldier has been killed in Northern Ireland. Not sure of exactly of the dates, but it's about 4 years since the IRA officialy disarmed. The peace process up North has continued since then and The British have been gradually lessening their military presence. Everything was going great, And now this happens out of the blue. what do these scumbags hope to achieve? God damn it! It's despicable. the soldiers who were shot were supposed to be going to Afghanistan this week. their posting in Antrim was in essence a bit of a holiday before they went to war. and this happens. Stupid motherfucking terrorists. Hopefully our leaders (I use the term loosely for the current government) will be able to move past and continue the good work that has been going on, and it will just be one-off occurence. The whole thing just makes me so angry though.

Yes, the RIRA are extremists, running contrary to the peace-willing consensus of the vast majority of people throughout the island of Ireland. Anyone with a brain and a heart would condemn the killings of the two poor lads the other day. There is another issue here, though, and I find myself - amazingly - sharing some of Gerry Adams's reservations about laying blame absolutely in the RIRA's court (as repugnant though their acts are). What service to the ongoing peace-process - which is by and large going so well, so far - does an undercover army surveillance unit provide in Northern Ireland, except to provoke extremist terrorist acts? This point serves in no measure to condone any act of violence by any party (just the opposite, in fact), except to illuminate that setting up the Special Reconnaisance Regiment was waving a red flag at these dissident paramilitaries, who are looking for any excuse to ruin the peace.

As Adams says, "The history, and it is a very unsettled history, is that the British Army in Ireland isn't wanted, by republicans, by patriots, by democrats ... Many people have suffered at the hands of the British Army.

"And again I stress that we are now in a totally peaceful and democratic phase after a huge amount of work, hard work, not least by republicans and the leadership of the British Government at that time."

We need to transcend militaristic and paramilitaristic mindsets completely, in promoting a peaceful resolution to events in the north, on all sides.

In case you're wondering, I'm a John Hume sort of bloke.

Adams was fairly spot on there. McGuinness's statement was fairly insensitive & to the point, but that kind of response is needed now, not a flowery "OMG its awful". people need to point to the real issue immediately - everyone needs to stick together, and not descend into sectarian distrust again

The IMC warned that the Continuity IRA & the Real IRA have been very active over the past 3-4 years. A lot of the gangland killings in the Republic are linked with them, and a good dozen bombs have been found & disarmed before detonating both north &south of the border in the last 2 years. .....so then the guy called in the Army guys. It was a dumb move but the attack wouldve come anyway, and the RIRA & CIRA will point to the fact that there are any army barracks in the country as motive to attack.

theres an MI5 base in Antrim, and the PSNI are very good, and the Gardai are there too. keep the army out if it makes things worse, which it does.

good to see a united political stance against them. but my god, it shook me when i saw the news the other day. id a lump in throat thinking of going back to the days when this stuff was daily news.

    fucking bastard scumbag IRA fucks.

Its mad (but great) to see it nowadays, but Adams & McGuinness are turning into Hume sort of blokes too. stick to the politics and it'll work. The IRA cant claim to have any legitimacy anywhere on the island anymore.
