What exactly does self releasing mean?

Clear up the confusion for me. What do they mean they are self releasing the new album?
2008 - MSG 6/24-6/25
2010 - Newark 5/18 MSG 5/21
2011 - PJ20 9/3-9/4
2012 - MIA Festival 9/2
2013 - Wrigley Field 7/19 Brooklyn 10/18-10/19 Philly 10/22
2015 - Colbert show - 9/23 Global Citizens Festival 9/26
2016 - Philly 4/28-4/29 MSG 5/1-5/2

    I think pj will more than likely sell the album via the website. They may do something like radiohead did with "in rainbows." it's been speculated, but I guess we will see.

    Also I believe Tone by Jeff Ament was self-released... If I remember correctly the record label is "Monkey Wrench"

    PJ will probably do the same thing... They might hook up w/ someone to distribute the album however.

  • Nine Inch Nails self releases all their albums now...which generally means he drops it online first, with hard copies to follow...

    also what Radiohead did with In Rainbows. It's the way it should be done, IMO.

    i reckon the album will be released for purchase online through monkeywrench records, maybe in special edition box like in rainbows and the release to music stores and whatnot will be done through another mainstream label....

    pretty much like the last album was released
