Who else is a fan of this?

There are a lot of things I think that could be done differently to not directly effect the MLB season, but I think it's pretty exciting.

By the way...

The Netherlands is currently beating The Dominican Republic right now (3-2 bottom of the 8th)! Wow!

I just found it odd to heard "Born in the USA" playing in the background between innings of the US Venezuela game when the game is being played in Canada.

I'm hoping Australia can keep up their upset of Mexico in Mexico.

The idea is great ... not really a lot you can do with the timing, which, really takes a lot away in both the capability of the guys that are playing (too early in the season for them to be at their best) and the talent allowed to participate (many guys were not allowed to play by their major league clubs due to rehabing injuries).

Watched tonight's VEN v USA game ... man, I cannot stand Rick Sutcliffe (he was the color announcer) ... ugh, he makes Joe Morgan nearly tolerable.

But, I do love seeing these guys play for their country and forming bonds and getting pumped with their teammates ... seeing Jeter and Pedroia turn a DP ... Miguel Cabrera, Magglio Ordonez and Bobby Abreu, what an outfield.

On the flip side, I guess, Pedroia and Youkilis were giving Red Sox teammate Jason Bay of Canada a lot of shit before, during and after the USA v Canada game.

Australia is now up 17 - 7 on Mexico! :o

what?!?!!? you must think I was somehow taking a shot at the Mets. 2 straight mega collapse chokejobs have made you hyper-sensitive. If you think hurling it at 96 MPH pitch after pitch, at max effort, ina meaningful game, is comparable to what "he be doing" in a meaningless Grapefruit matinee, you don't know much about pitching. Just ask Luis Ayala, who went from elite set up man, to mop up man, after blowing out his elbow in the 2006 WBC. if that were Mariano or Joba, or anyone else, ramping it up 3 weeks into spring training, I would have been nervous as hell.

nice try, looking to get under my skin with the arod shit. I hate the guy, and wish they could get out of his deal. I think they'll do better without him. Anyone who thinks Jose Reyes could launder Derek jeter's jock doesn't know much about the game.

No kidding. This thing is so fraudulent that it's not even funny. They aren't trying as hard as they can because there is no pay and no national pride. The Italian team was filled with guys who haven't set foot in an Italian restaurant in years. It means absolutely nothing! I tried watching, but it's also like watching spring training in terms of their readiness too. So lame!
    Go Get 'Em Tigers!
  • Putz is good, very good. But he does have arm concerns, which is why i would not let him anywhere near this thing. I think a healthy Putz is as good or better than KRod. KRod has all the flashy numbers, and the dancing and all that. But he also walks a tightrope, puts a lot of guys on base.

A few corrections ... first, there is prize money ... the winning team will split $3M amongst them, may not mean a lot fo teh dominicans or the US team, but hell, would love to see the Netherlands win it, they'd love that coin! :D

Second,"they aren't trying as hard as they can", well ... these guys are FAR MORE into these games than any spring training game I've ever seen ... fist pumping, cheering, screaming ... sorry, but there is a LOT of emotion for an 'exhibition' ... these guys have plenty of national pride, just ask the DR how they feel after losing to the Netherlands.

Watching Youkilis foul off about 9 pitches then finally jacking a mistake over the left field fence, and seeing Derek Jeter being the first guy out fo the dugout pumping the fist ... yeah, there are some cool moments if you watch it.

the fact there are guys trying to scramble onto the Italian team should inditacte that people would do anything to play in this.

It's far from perfect, and it doesn't prove who really is the best ... but, it's a decent little tournament.

I was at the Canada/USA game on Saturday and during the game, they had a thing on the Jumbotron for each country. You know, the usual crazy fans all decked out in their gear (mostly hockey jerseys for the Canadian fans, of course), cheering for their respective countries, and they also showed footage of the previous World Classic for each country. Anyway, during the U.S. "montage", they played "Born in the U.S.A.". They must have done it again the next game. I have to admit, being a Canadian at a Canada/USA game in Canada and being forced to hear "Born in the U.S.A. was slightly annoying. They played nearly the whole damn song. :) Although, I suppose us Canucks got a little Rockin' in the Free World, which is a far superior song. ;)

Also, it's new. Who knows what this tournament could turn out to be in the future? It could be a well-respected event years from now.

Anyway, the outcome of Saturday's game wasn't ideal, but I had an absolute blast, and we were so close ... oh, so close! The atmosphere was incredible. The Skydome hasn't been that bumping with energy in over a decade, and it was fun to be a part of that again. Here's hoping Canada can beat the Italians tonight and move on. I think another Canada/USA game would be awesome!

I foresee the WBC picking up a lot of steam in coming years. The U.S. team is taking it very seriously. It is obvious that the Central and South American teams take if very seriously. I'm sure Japan wants to prove a thing or two also. Plus, baseball has been terminated from the Olympics. I think that the fan base for this tournament only has upside.

Just like in the NHL, it is very important for these players to have a chance to represent their country in a world-wide tournament. Some players are willing to play through injuries (unless they are waiting for a steroid controversy to cool off). And for people that live outside of Canada and the U.S., this is probably bigger then any other form of baseball competition in the world. If you don't think so, can you only imagine what kind of party that Chavez would have thrown if the USA would have lost on Sunday . . . although I imagine it became "let's pretend this never happened" page 13 news after the shellacking.

Looks like the title game will be between the Koreans and Japanese unless Team USA makes a comeback against Team Japan, down 6-2 it the bottom 7th.

 What an ugly swing by David Wright to end the top 7th.

3 things bout that should be done to get more people into it in my view

1.no mercy rule-is this pro ball or your local softball/baseball game. who cares what the score is

    2. do this during the end of the season, not during spring training. genius move to break up team chemistry

    3. play the games in cities where fans care like ny or boston or chicago, not in florida where theres 13,000 people at the game.

Well with it being in March I think weather wise it would be hard to have it in NY Boston or Chicago, but yes, it still is a good point.

very good point. then play it in stadiums that have retractable roofs. 13,000 people is a joke and shows just how much people in florida dont care bout baseball.

No manager or gm would allow his pitchers to pitch after the playoffs. Either the majority of pitchers would not have pitched in over a month (end of September) or would have pitched throughout the playoffs after a 162 game season. There is way too high a risk or injury doing it at the end of the year.

There is no way derek jeter should have been playing ss instead of rollins. I've seen him not get to balls and make bad throws that any philadelphia phillie fan knows and has seen jimmy make a million times. Jeter years ago probably would have made them plays but not now. And it's a shame when your playing for a chance to make the title game that your best options aren't out there were they belong.

Once every four years or three years or however often they do it they should start teh season a week earlier and finish it a week later and take two weeks during the all star break and do this.

Everyone is in shape in the season. Hopefully teams will let players play. It could be a lot of fun. What if the USA were to trot this line up out there:
    1b- Mark Texiera
    2b- Chase Utley
    SS- Jimmy Rollins
3b- Alex Rodriguiz or David Wright (depending on if zlex feels he is an american that year  )
    C- Brian McCan
    Rf- Matt Holiday
    CF- Grady Sizemore
    LF-Ryan Braun

Quite a better line up then they trotted out most days during this disaster.
    Charlotte 00
    Charlotte 03
    Asheville 04
    Atlanta 12
    Greenville 16, Columbia 16
