Hey folks, I've been wanting to listen to some Reggae lately, and I have no clue where to start! Of course, there's the legendary Exodus and Catch a Fire by Bob Marley....but I'd love to hear some other legendary/great reggae albums. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • I also would like to recommend the movie country man and the sound track that goes with it. You can get it from amazon if you can't find it at your local video store. If you happen to get it let me know what think about it. I had to watch it about 3 times before I could under stand it.Most of the actors have really thick Jamaican accents 8-)

hmmm depends on how you define reggae...

    Here's a list:

    Ska/Rocksteady/Dub/Roots/Rockers Era (1960s and 1970s)

    Skatalites-any compilation (mostly instrumentals)
    Culture-Two Sevens Clash
    The Congos-Heart of the Congos
    Junior Murvin-Police and Thieves
    John Holt-100 Volts of Holt
    The Abyssinians-Satta Massagana
Augustus Pablo-King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown
Dennis Brown-Wolfs and Leopards (or pretty much ANY best of album)
    Gregory Isaacs-Mr Brown
    Heptones-Party Time
    Steel Pulse-Island Anthology

    Rub-a-dub/Dancehall Era (1980s and 1990s)

    Black Uhuru/Michael Rose/Junior Reid/Sly and Robbie-ANYTHING
King Jammy's-get the 8 cds on VP records (great massive compilation of digital era reggae)
    Barrington Levy-Too Experienced
Sizzla-Black Woman and Child/Praise Ye Jah/Da Real Thing/Royal Son of Ethiopia
    Luciano-ANY ALBUM
Garnet Silk-ANY album (great best of called Music is the Rod)
Buju-Voice of Jamaica, Til Shiloh, Inna Heights, Too Bad
    Beenie Man-Many Moods of Moses
Tony Rebel-Jah is By My Side
    Capleton-More Fire

    Current:

    Tarrus Riley-Parables
    Gentleman-Anything (German artist)
    Damian Marley-Welcome to Jamrock/Halfway Tree
Easy Star All Stars-NYC based collective who do reggae interpretations of classic rock albums, so far they`ve done OK COMPUTER and Dark Side of the Moon, with Sgt Pepper`s Lonely Hearts band out in April
    Bitty Mclean-On Bond Street

Man i could go on and on...i`ve left out the hardcore dancehall stuff tho...because for most people the patois is not very accessible.
