Vinyl HELP please...can't get mine to work...

Hey, I finally collected all the PJ vinyl with the exception of Benaroya, so I decided to buy a player. I bought a fairly simple ION player and I connected the audio (red/white) plugs to my Bose 3.2.1. Auxillary input and I put a record on...it works but the volume is whacked. I have it on extremely loud and you can BARELY hear it. I may be doing something totally stupid or it just doesn't work with this system...Audiophiles, please help!!

Sounds like you might need to run the turntable through a preamp before outputting the signal to the receiver.

Your player certainly doesn't have a preamp.
    Two possibilities:
    1. you hifi does have a "phono" output. If so, you have to plug your player there
    2. You plug your player into the auxiliar of your hifi. But if you do, your player has to be equipped with a preamp.
If the player you bought doens't have a preamp, you may buy one external (there are cheap ones, for $30 or so)

Depending on which ION model you have, look underneath you will see a switch for phono/line level. if you are connected through a AUX on your Bose use the line level. Be sure to turn down the volume first.
    Hope this helps.
  • Thanks a lot everyone, I will test it out when I get home...or get a pre-amp

This is the exact problem I had. I was ready to take mine back to the store until I read this in the instructions. Just a little switch below the platter was all it took. Good Advice.

Seriously? You have all the records and then you go and get a player.......interesting.
  • Well, I kept reading on here about how much better they sound, so I have been casually checking out Ebay for the last year and then, just starting picking them up as I could afford, good deal, etc., now, I am trying to get a player. Again, thanks for the advice everyone...

I started my record collection before I had a good player.. I was ready to dig out my parent's Radio Shack special until my father decided I needed something better and hooked me up with a nice Technics for Christmas.. Probably one of the last non-dj style turntables Technics made.

I'm going to take a peek to see if it has the option for phono/line because it not having a preamp is holding me back from upgrading my stereo..

  • When I read this post I spit out my diet pepsi... I mis-interpreted the thread as you didn't know how to put the needle to the vinyl... Soooo glad that is not the case!

If you are still having trouble, see below:

see this needle...a see my hand...
drop, drop, dropping it down...oh, so gently...

    That should fix things!

It sounds like your records are bad. You should probably send them to me so I can properly dispose of them. :D

    Seriously, I have a feeling it's a pre-amp issue. I bought one on eBay for like $20.
  • I've got the majority of the PJ records, as well as tons of other artists on vinyl, have pre-ordered the Super Deluxe edition, and I currently don't have a turntable either...

    :D

Actively saving for a nice one right now...

...which would happen much faster if I wasn't regularly out buying more vinyl/posters/CDs/tickets, etc...
