I now have an appointment for next Monday for a root filling and a scale and polish :(

To make matters worse, i've also been referred to the hospital for the extraction of my wisdom teeth... possibly under general anesthetic :(

In 4 months I may have to have crowns and braces...

I hate my teeth.

I hate dentists, I got my first filling last year and although it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be the thought of having to go again still terrifies me.

There is just something about them I just dont like, I think it may be that I am quite obsessive about cleaning my teeth and I am scared that they will drill to much and mess them up or something.

I am now 27, so yup I got my first filling at 26.

I had my first filling when I was 7... because I knocked my teeth out! My first filling due to decay was when I was 19.

That's impressive... I take it you're not a fan of toffees then? ;)

Awfully sorry for the very English phrasing old chap ;)

You should go to the dentist... it's better to be safe than sorry! You don't want dentures before you're 50! :D

The thought of a possible genral anesthetic is terrifying me :(

General anesthesia rocks. If I could, I would get all my dental work done under general anesthesia.

Really? I'm hoping they do it under local. I've never been under general and i'm scared for two reasons:

    1 - Needles. I bloody hate them.

    2 - I won't wake up.... it'd be just my luck :(

i had my wisdom teeth out about 6 months ago i think. it was an interesting experience. they filled me with some local anesthesia which worked fine for me. the removal process was crazy but i swear it did not hurt. after anesthesia, they drilled a few holes in the wisdom teeth. once the holes were drilled, the dental surgeon guy said "you will feel some pressure", but what he did was push on the teeth with the holes with his fingers until they shattered. he had to push pretty hard, but like i said it didn't hurt! i washed out the teeth fragments, they sewed me up and i went on my way. i had a few fragments come up through the wound which i was warned about and they also didn't hurt.

i am not a squeamish person and i feel i have a high tolerance to pain so take all that info in stride=p

    goodluck!

I really hate needles too. I mean I really, really hate needles. (Well, I don't have anything against them in and of themselves; I just really hate for them to be stuck in me.) But I'd rather have a little IV needle in my arm or hand and then not feel anything else (including fear) than have a big needle stuck in my mouth repeatedly and be aware of all the torture that's happening. Plus, I think the kind of anesthesia they give you for having your wisdom teeth out isn't as bad as the kind they give you for full-on surgery. (I think.)

Wow... Thanks for that! :D I didn't know that's how they did it :) Did they remove the stitches or did they dissolve?

Unfortunately mine will not be that easy... I broke the crowns of them off a while ago (shoulda gone to the dentist then, I know  ) and now they're just roots in the gum. Although they're very clean, apparently they are gonna be difficult extractions and it will involve cutting a great big hole in each side of my gum :(

As I say, I normally enjoy the dentists and I too have a high pain tolerance so i'm hoping they do it under local.

See, i'm ok with big needles in my mouth for some reason, I just hate intravenous. It's the whole arm/hand thing I can't do :(

Also, i've never been under general for full on surgery or otherwise so I have no idea what it's like... I could be dead and I wouldn't know the difference :?

When I had my wisdom teeth out it went something like this:

The doctor was asking me which renaissance artists were my favorite, and while I was trying to think that over he stuck the needle in my hand. Then when I went to answer the question I was in the recovery room.

I'm getting all that done during the next two weeks :S At least it makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only dude over 20 that will be using braces ;)

    I'm a dudette! :(

I'm hoping to have it all sorted in about 3 months, crowns and all. I also hoping I don't have to have braces as it was only mentioned in passing but i'm fearful of the worst :(

Good luck with your dentistry! :D

I haven't been to the dentist in.. *does the math* umm.. 4-5 years or so.

my teeth are fine, and even though I have been thinking that I should go in for a check-up but I just haven't gotten around to it. yet.

I've never had much trouble with my teeth - luckily! cause I really do hate going to the dentist. a big reason for it is the fact that my jaw is somewhat troublesome (it makes a weird sound when I eat sometimes and stuff) and I can't always open it as wide as I should at the dentist. :( or I can but it hurts.

never had to have any fillings or anything done either. :)

oh, it's hereditary, nothing much that can be done I'm afraid. mainly it's just annoying, like when I open my mouth real wide it sort of "clicks" and then does the same when I close my mouth again.

it's not like it's painful or falling off or anything. :D

EDIT: I've "had it" all my life, the dentist knows the situation.

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow - not looking forward to it

I didn't go to the dentist for a few years between ages 18-20 mainly because I couldn't afford it

Since I started going back I have spent soooo much money on my teeth it makes me sick
