Can't go wrong with technics; they are standard. Pioneer, Denon, Mitsubishi for used models. Project and Music Hall make decent entry level, contemporary players. I wouldn't pay too much at all. If you don't want to damage your records, make sure your needle is new. Linear tracking players are great for ease and simplicity. Its all about having fun, but remember that your possessions end up owning you. Collecting is for the birds.0

Do a craigslist search - that's how I found my Technics, and it was extremely affordable. Technics are extremely durable, so you don't have to worry about getting them used, as well.'05 - TO, '06 - TO 1, '08 - NYC 1 & 2, '09 - TO, Chi 1 & 2, '10 - Buffalo, NYC 1 & 2, '11 - TO 1 & 2, Hamilton, '13 - Buffalo, Brooklyn 1 & 2, '15 - Global Citizen, '16 - TO 1 & 2, Chi 2

There are basically two types of record players: belt-driven, and direct drive. Belt driven is just what it sounds like: the turntable is driven by a belt, similar to an engine's fan. This is ideal for listening to records. Because there is some give with a belt, the needle is able to read the intricacies of the record's groove more faithfully, and there is less risk of damaging the record. Direct-drive is more for DJs who need to scratch. Because the turntable is being driven directly by a motor, a DJ can execute any number of stabs, scratches, etc, and the record will immediately begin again at full speed. This can be both damaging to a record over time, plus it is more forceful in it's application of needle to groove, meaning you could potentially miss some of the intricacies of the music. Many people will try to sell you a direct drive system, thinking that because it's the newer technology, it must be better. They are mistaken; get a belt-driven system.Post edited by tragibigzanda on0

Buy a Direct Drive. There are NUMEROUS advantages, and you can get a Great Stanton or Numark DD table for under $200. If you plan to spin vinyl occasionally, a Belt Driven table will be fine, but there is no question a Direct Driven Table is a better quality machine...Especially for frequent use...0

I mean no disrespect, but could you elaborate? Unless this person is a DJ, I see only advantages with a belt-driven system.0 -

That defeats my entire purpose for listening to vinyl. That's like artists who record in a digital format and then release their albums on vinyl.0

Yeah, for me at least 1/2 the fun of listening to a record is the manualness of it, actually physically placing the needle on the record.0
