    year zero and with teeth are very friendly to get into., but the fragile is where its at.

    year zero is by far the worst nin album. id check that out last. the fragile might be a bit much to start with but its a great album. so if youre willing to give it some time thats not a bad start. if you want something loud and pretty straight forward broken is a good choice.
  • The Downward Spiral is the obvious answer. Broken is loud, fast and in your face. With Teeth is very catchy and accessible. I would start with those 3.

    From there graduate to The Fragile and Pretty Hate Machine.

    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}

    They were at their peak in popularity with The Downward Spiral, so I agree that's an obvious starting point.
    It is time to admit that we used to rock like hurricanes. It is time to run for the hills and go round and round. It is time for us to shout at the devil. We've got the right to choose it, there ain't no way we'll lose it, and we're not gonna take it anymore.

    PHM or Downward will do the trick....
    Conversations getting dull
    There's a constant ringing in my ears
    Sense of humor's void and numb
    And I'm bored to tears.......
  • Downward Spiral followed by Pretty Hate Machine then The Fragile.

    You should see them live... it's bitchin' :mrgreen:
    Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...

    ... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.

    With Teeth or Year Zero. The Fragile is too long and intricate for a non-fan to appreciate.

    However, I would recommend downloading one of the 3 shows from December 2008 that they released free to the fans. While they release high-quality, the audio from all 3 shows has been ripped and torrented freely. You need to hear NIN live to appreciate them.

    I would not recommend starting with Downward Spiral because some of its best songs are buried under a layer of distortion. not easy to listen to at times.

    enjoy.

    I certainly would not recommend Year Zero or With Teeth. They're like diet NIN... NIN without the drugs. Man, you gotta start with the good shit. Distortion is where it's at. How can you overlook songs like Ruiner, The Big Come Down and Sin? C'mon...

    oh and you need to SEE NIN live to appreciate them.

    I also say With Teeth. It's one of their most straightforward albums with a lot of recognizable tunes from the radio. I didn't care for the Downward Spiral the first several times I heard it... it's some strange non-songs akin to Vitalogy's filler experiments. They're ok once you've come to love the band, but for the undevoted it just sounds weird.

    I'd also say Pretty Hate Machine as a good place to start. There are so many incredible songs on that album.

    What's this about audio from live shows? I heard about the dvd project, but didn't know anything about live audio releases... is there a way to get them without torrent?

    after the tour, the release 40GB worth of HD video to the fans. the footage covered multiple cameras and 3 shows in full. some fans worked on ripping the audio from the videos and torrented the results, which is three full shows in soundboard quality.

    I dont know of any other way to get them than the torrents on dime.

    See them live, and see them SOON. Trent's said he's going to put the NIN entity on hiatus for a while. (We doubt he will stop making music though).

    Music-wise, any of them really - The Downward Spiral is simply a masterpiece IMO - you might need to ease into it though, depending on what other music you like. Its kind of like being pinned against your chair with a jet engine full blast on your face (for some songs (eg. Heresy, Mr. Self-Destruct), not all though (my favorite track is probably The Becoming, off it). I can't recommend that album highly enough - it is a true work of art. While I can listen to other albums on random, NEVER with TDS. It must be listened to from beginning to end in the order presented. It takes a while to truly appreciate the details of this album.

    With Teeth is very accessible.

    One of the wonderful things about NIN music is its intricacy - there is so much to it. I swear every time I listen to Somewhat Damaged I find something else in it. Then you'll have a fun romp like Starfuckers. (Check out the NIN/Manson performance of this from MSG in 2000 on youtube)

    If you like instrumentals, try Ghosts. And you can download The Slip for FREE right off the NIN website.

    If you want to hear more acoustic playing, check out Still. It is TR on piano with some other instruments and is amazing too.

    Do I sound like a commercial yet? :lol: Can't help it though. Its how highly I think of NIN.

    Closer is on Downward Spiral.
    But start with Pretty Hate Machine. It's quality NIN that isn't too dark.

    just get them all, right??!!!???

    i love year zero, but i think you really had to go through the ARG to really understand and appreciate it.

    still is fantastic. if he actually does put nin on hiatus, he should tour solo and just play piano.

    the audio from the dvd project can be downloaded. send me a pm and i will send you the links.

    my head would explode with joy! hauntingly beautiful is the only way Trent + piano can be described.

    I was not a fan early on. I got to see them on The Fragility Tour and liked some songs I was familiar with, but it still didnt hit me overall. When With Teeth came out and I heard a few live shows, I was truly blown away. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to see them about 15 times. Today, I think they are the most important band out there. even if you dont like the music, any fan of music has to appreciate the fact that Trent only does new things and the innovation in his mind is super-human. If you followed the release of Year Zero or got to see The Slip tour, you know what I mean. I am really sad that NIN is planning a hiatus, but am hopeful that Trent will realize that that he cant live with out music, and more importantly, music cant live without him.

    with teeth is what got me into them. then i'd say the downward spiral.
    Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
    Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
    Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

    Pretty Hate Machine probably has the most well known , radio play song in "Head Like a Hole" . but I prefer The Fragile or seeing NIN live.

    She is right on the money......but yes, listen to them all.
    Whenever someone shows interest in a band I've loved my whole life and asks what should I start with first, I always recomend listening to each one in the chronological order that they were made. It makes sense to listen to the bands evolution and how it's fans heard it too.

    The only "problem" with starting with Pretty Hate Machine is that those songs are played so much more aggresively now. I remember an interview with Trent after the 1994 Woodstock show when he noted how casual fans had expected more of his "synth-fag" (his words, not mine) stuff and instead he came out with Downward Spiral and Broken material and just blew everyone's minds. I mean, compare the live version (even on the AATCHB album) with the original studio Head Like a Hole. There's no comparison.

    Even a new fan can start with The Downward Spiral. Sure it's aggressive. But you'll survive.

    everyone says see them live, so why not start with the live cd, "And All That Could Have Been"?

    I'm pretty sure it was this one that hooked me.. followed by Pretty Hate Machine... but I agree With Teeth is a good studio album to start with, very accessible..

    I don't know why I didn't think of that... it's a great live album!
  • start with Downward Spiral...

    then do Ghosts I-IV

    Trent is at his best when he sways away from the angst music, Ghosts has some of the best instrumental arrangements and you get away from the cheesey lyrics that are annoying on some of the last few albums

    I agree to starting with Pretty Hate Machine...at the beginning. But I have to disagree that it isn't too dark. It isn't as heavy as TDS or Broken, but lyrically it's very dark.

    Compared to Broken, Downward Spiral and The Fragile, I would consider it the least dark and most accessible. All the albums after that don't seem to have that same darkness; I'm assuming since he cleaned up. I think his best work was from 89-99 personally.

    I can see what you're saying, but to be PHM is still very dark. It isn't nearly as aggressive or angry as his later work, more hurt and pained, but I still find it dark. But hey, that's just me!

    If we're talking favourite albums, then mine is The Fragile. Possibly my favourite album, full stop. I can understand why people don't like it, but to me it's an epic materpiece which would be incomplete without the intrumental songs which many consider to be filler.

    Disregarding the remix albums, none of which i've ever really liked, the only NIN work I have failed to get into is Ghosts. I own it, but I just don't seem to be able to love it like I love the rest of Trent's work. I started to love The Slip recently and I never really liked it when it was released.

    I love The Fragile. Every time I listen to any song on it I hear something I didn't hear the last time. Just Like You Imagined may be my favorite instrumental, right above A Warm Place.
