this customer storms into the shop i work at, saying she's never coming here again.
then she proceeds to tell me how the delivery notice card says we open at 12pm and we actually open at 1pm.
then she is mad because the post office she usually goes to isn't where she has to pick up this parcel.
so as i'm trying to explain to her that the delivery workers give the customers the notice and the postal outlets the parcels/letters, and that our post office has no choice either where they go since we're not the one who deliver the delivery notice cards... she interrupts me and starts screaming at me some more!
THEN she tells me, "i dont fucking care get my fucking parcel now."
so i gave her back her delivery notice card and said, "no, i won't. i won't serve anyone who talks to me like that."
she said, yes you will and starts screaming at me some more again!
so i try explaining again that Canada Post has printed the wrong times on the delivery card and its a problem we've been trying to fix... she says, you guys applied for a Canada Post and its our fault and stuff like this.
i told her to just give me her id and take her letter and leave.

when she found out it was a letter she starts screaming at me again, "why cant they just leave this in my fucking mail box?!"
i told her abruptly that it was cos they need her signature.
then i told her, you know, i'm just an employee here, i dont make the times and i dont print these DNC slips and i sure as hell don't decide wehre she picks up her mail.
she again insisted that i work for canada post so that it is my fault.

i couldnt take it anymore so i just said, yah, i do work here, i've worked here almost 3 years, and you know what? you are the worst, rudest, and most horrible i have EVER had working here.
i told her to have a nice sunday, and that i hope it gets better for her, because she is a MISERABLE person.
she said quietly, well... i'm not coming back here anymore.
and i said, that's fine. i really don't care. you can go deal with the people at the pharmasave. (another post outlet that is known to be miserable to their customers).

i know i shouldn't have talked back, but i have NEVER had someone talk to me like that. not even the bitchiest of bitches...

  • Good for you for standing up for yourself... I discovered a little trick that helps me deal with pains in the ass.... Once she started yelling at me, I would have told her "hold on one suck it", but fast enough to where she still heard "hold on one second", then went in the back, had a nice chuckle and come back refreshed... Go on, try it :)

And to deal with stupid people who talk too much about shit the don't understand, I like to say "Got anything else more on (slight pause/ hard swallow) this subject"... then chuckle that I called them a moron, and move on...

That's my retarded 2 cents, good for you for not taking any shit!

one of the best ways to deal with someone like that is to be cheery and agree with everything they etc....it disarms them because really they're looking for a fight :D

but i like the way you handled her...she deserved it

i agree! i ahve done that before too... when i used to work 2 jobs, my other one was Sears... that place is teething with horrible customers. there were all sorts of ways i could deal with them, i especially liked the happy-go-lucky way... the funny thing is you begin to know which customer works best with which defence strategy!

this lady was just shocking though, this is like a neighbourhood, family-run store... people are (i'd say) 98% of the time great customers

  • I work in retail and I know exactly where you are coming from. I don't know about you ,but I can always tell when a person has worked in customer service before or not. It seems to me the people who haven't are always the rudest customers. I really hate it when a customer wants service while talking on their damn cell phone :x I have gotten to the point where I won't even look at a customer when they are on their phone much less help them.

When people are on their mobile phones, i always try to help others first.
and if i have no other customer, i make sure i ask every question possible while htey are on the phone... i know thats childish but i enjoy interrupting them.
working at a post office is great for that, because i start explaining every possible option to mail their stuff, and then you always have sub-options, like insurance, signature, etc.
everytime they think i'm done i ask another question and interrupt them again

YAY!!! I love hearing about people who don't allow others to treat them badly just because they work in customer service. Some people can be DICKS!!

When I was managing, I would have to train new employees. I would tell them to be courteous...try their best to help...BUT don't take anyones' SHIT!! Don't be verbally abused if it is not your fault. And I would always remind them that they have the right to refuse service to someone who is being verbally abusive.

Yuck...Canada Post...you must get angry people all the time!

    awesome.
I worked retail for about three months, that was enough for me...
It was at a video store....
my worst argument was with a customer that was trying to return a used porn tape (1970's lesbian-prison-porn to be exact) a week after he bought it. We had a no-return policy on all movies, but he was demanding his $4 for his bargain bin porn. he wanted to return it cause it 'wasn't explicit enough'. He made a big enough deal that I had to get a manager on the phone. It was hilariously awkward.

to the op - nice work. don't take that shit! I wish a customer had been there to help you out... These jerks don't usually expect another customer to speak up.

hey, you could tell by the box that it was 70's lesbian-jail-porn....it's obvious that it's not going to be gonzo close-ups, and there is going to be.....errr...visual impairments due to the uh...personal grooming techniques of the day.
I don't remember if it was $4, but it wasn't much more...literally bargain bin porn. The guy was overweight in a suit that was too small for him, with greasy uncombed hair, coke-bottle glasses, and a nasal issue that made his voice weird and his breathing sound all heavy. It was surreal, actually.

look i have asthma...you don't have to put me down because of it....and not all of us can afford a new suit every 6 months.....

funny thing is this is a video store...
its got a canada post office outlet in it... among other things.
most people are great, in fact almost all the video renters are great... but with a big company you always get the shitty, low, self centered, the-world-owes-me customers.

about porn, we got new catholic owners about a year ago.
and there went our porno! in fact i remember this one guy was keen on buying the entire stock.
from a business point of view, not a good idea but whatever.
you need to separate church and...video store! ;)

I've worked in customer service more than I care to remember, and I agree that no one should take verbal abuse, BUT, I also have noticed that so many people working in customer service expect to be talked to badly and respond way too nasty over nothing.
I have had to take things back, or waited 3 hours past appointment times, etc. and when I approach whoever is there to deal with customers, they immediately come off with, "I will not be talked to like that!". I mean they say it when I even ask a question in a normal tone of voice. That line, "I just work here.", is very aggravating. The person who is there to deal with customers is usually the only person to ask or voice a grievance to, and to get satisfaction. I am usually happy and just need whatever it may be resolved, but when they come back at me with such venom, I get pissed. I am the fricking customer. There is no one else to help me. They are put there to help me. AND they get defensive right off the bat.
In the past 10 years or so this seems to be contagious. I think if you work in that kind of field, you should be prepared and happy to assist customers. It is your job!
In this case on this forum, yes the lady was rude, but again, many times the customer doesn't have to be rude to get nastiness from the clerk, etc.
I know I have had it with a few places I used to shop and I don't shop there any more. I am sure the clerk doesn't care, but I am also sure the owners, or bosses do! If I have left the place, so have other customers. (I am ususally more patient than most around me.)
So, for all...this can be a double edged sword.

i totally understand where you are coming from, and this isn't my first customer service job, and certainly not my first horrible customer. i have been on both sides of the counter dealing with all kinds of ass holes in the beauty that is the retail industry, as a customer and as an employee and agree that there are definitely horrible people on both ends.

but when someone storms in the door and immediately starts spitting fire at me, and doesnt even let me have a chance to explain OR help them, and then demands i do something for them by saying "get my fucking parcel"... that person does not deserve service with a smile. end of story.

haha no, from what i remember he was on the short side, pretty slim and sold fruit.
i was outside of the store after closing with my friend (the only other employee that works here) and the guy came up to us and inquired about where the porn would be going.

I used to work at a big supermarket here in Australia (coles) and I was working on the front desk serving cigarettes. This guy came up, I asked for his I.D and he produced an expired license. I said I won't be able to serve them to him because of the invalid I.D. So he expressed his dissatisfaction and goes and get this guy who was with him, he was clearly in his mid to late 20s and got their smokes. They got their change (about 70cents I think) they took a few steps and hurled them in my direction at some serious pace. I yelled out "Thanks for the tip you dickhead"

But customers are fuckheads, my life got threatened, People said they would bash me. Not worth working retail.
