How fucked am I?

About 5 months ago, I got pulled over for having a dead tail light on my car. No big deal, no fine. Just a fix it ticket. Today I get a letter from the Los Angeles superior court telling me that my liscense is suspended and I have a bail amount of $700 to pay, PLUS an additional $300 if I don't get it settled by Tuesday. All because I failed to appear in court and get this thing settled. I know I should have just gotten it taken care of before the due date, but between work and everything else going on I just forgot about the ticket. Of course this comes at the worst time of the month with rent due tomorrow. The point is, I don't have $700 to take care of this right now, let alone $1,000. Do I have any chance of going down to the court and saying, "Listen, I know this should've been taken care of, but I simply forgot about it. It's just a fix it ticket." I was hoping I could get some input from someone that this has happened to. What ended up happening? Did the court give you any lieniency?

  • I dont know if this will make you feel better ,but about 3.5 yrs ago I let a guy borrow my car b/c my lic.was suspended and he got into an accident and left the scene.(and fled on foot) Also my insurance had lapsed on the car. well instead of this shit bag telling me I had to go track down my car. I was also charged with every thing . It was about $1600.00 worth of tickets  Also my car was impounded b/c of no insurance. To make matters worse I missed my court date. so to make a long story short I never got to tell a judge what really happened that night.I ended up having to pay all the tickets which took over a year to do and on top of that each ticket I got I had to pay a $100 late fee to the DMV :x :x and I lost my car to the tow truck company B/c by the time I had the money to get ins.on the car the storage fee was over $1000
So for the past 3.5 years I have been using public transportation to get my self back and forth to work and wherever else I need to go.This June I will be able to get my Lic. back and I can't fckin wait.

You may get some leniency if you appear pathetic but don't say "it was JUST a fix it ticket". I have a feeling the court wouldn't like that.
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream

  • In my state they have collections court which basically is like a second chance to appear do they not have that in Cali ?

Speedy, pretty hilarious. As far as a second chance goes the letter I got told me to call a number to either pay OR schedule a court date. I'm praying that they allow me to re-schedule and I don't have to pay.

no need to be harsh, man. i'm sure most adults have unexpected expenses come up. when they happen, it can freak you out a bit. then you think it through & figure it out. whether you're wealthy or not isn't an issue...an unexpected expense is just that. and unexpected expense.

Indian Summer, I was simply asking if anyone had been through this kind of situation before and how it turned out for them. I wasn't looking for sympathy. $700 is a lot of money to just have to give up at a moments notice. Maybe not for you, but for most working class Americans it is. Not sure why this rubbed you the wrong way.

Did go to court. Had to pay a $10 fee so the DMV wouldn't put a hold on my license. I have a scheduled court date in May to show the judge that it's been corrected. Looks like I might get off with only paying a $10 fee. Relieving to say the least. :D

If you don't have $700 in savings, you're more fucked than you realize. That's scary.
