Just curious...recording software...

Was at my local computer store and they have some Sony software for recording and also another for vocal recording.

Does anybody here use these programs?
How do you hook your instruments and mic to the computer to record?
Is it worth it?

I ask because I wouldn't mind putting down some ideas and mixing them.
