How Fucking Great is "Tim" by The Replacements?

It's one of those unintentional concept albums where you make it as your own. For me, it has everything you live through between the ages of 13-29; songs about the youth, young love, poolhalls, and bar scenes.

The first half of the album starts off very youthful with Hold My Life and Kiss Me On The Bus, dealing with innocences. Then comes the college and post-college years(as in ages 18-22/24ish) with the Waitress in the Sky, Swingin Party, Dose of Thunder and Bastards of Young. Finally, the last songs on the record represent your winding late 20-something years with Little Mascara and Here Comes A Regular.

What an amazing record this is!

  • its definitely a great album but it also has two of their worse songs. can someone, anyone explain how 'nowhere is my home' didnt make the album but 'dose of thunder' did?

its a real shame kids today will never really get 'left of the dial' since its so easy to keep in contact with people now. just imagine dating another rock singer. both are always touring and such. cant call from the bus, and probably dont even know if they are staying in a hotel. "I'll try to find you, left of the dial" thats such a great line in context of the song. the only way youre gonna hear her voice is if some college radio plays one of her bands songs. im just old enough to be on the last part of non-instant contact. i remember after school you had a choice to make go outside and play with friends, or stay home and wait for her to call, or your best friend to call. you couldnt have your cake and eat it too.

so i guess tim, and other replacements songs are dated, but ill always have a place for those tunes.

also bastards of young is probably the last real theme song for a generation.

    "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHH, God what a mess"
  • I absolutely love it. I hadn't been on the boards in a while and I had just finished listening to it, then saw this excellent thread. I really do love Swingin' Party especially.

I haven't heard "No Way Is My Home" but I like "Dose of Thunder", the weakest song for me is "Lay It Down Clown".

You'e absolutely right about their music sounding dated and somewhat "amateurish". Paul continues to do that with his solo albums.

Their style is definitely alternative 80's genre but I think every generation can relate to it because Paul's lyrics were very simple that everybody relate to. I was only 3 years-old when "Tim" came out in 1985 yet a lot of the theme from album are things I can related to in the 90's and 2000's.

I know "Let It Be" is considered to be their best record but it's a bit too punk for me. "Tim" is the album that best describe their sound.

My favorite track off the album! :D
If being alone's a crime I'm serving forever
    Being strong's your kind
I need help here with this feather
If being afraid is a crime
    We hang side by side
At the swingin' party down the line

what?? its finally easy to get a copy of its on the tim reissue, along with a demo version of cant hardly wait and an electric version with bob. oh and a fast version of kiss me on the bus.

go buy a copy now, go go go! 'nowhere is my home' is worth it alone.

Whoa! thanks for the info, I didn't even know about. I only have the originals. I looked up their wikipage and Rhino records have re-issued and re-mastered all their discography.

'only if we must' is one of my all time favorites. and the demo version of 'torture'......

still kinda confused why they released the demo version of 'if you get married' which is on like an old paul solo demo, rather than the full band version. they were replacements reissues, id think the band version should have gotten the release. oh well, both are awesome tracks.

there was once a time when i wouldnt even question who my favorite band was, but since i discovered the replacements the other year, things are alittle different now. and tim was the first album i ended up buying cause bastards of young and left of the dial. i bought the greatest hits on whim and was like i need to check out an album......since then pj just hasnt been so godly.

kinda surprised pj never covered the replacements.

Yup, If You Get Married is great, along with Run For The Country, Learn How To Fail, and Sixteen Blue with heavy piano. Great work on the compilation!

Yeah what a shame PJ hasn't covered anything from them yet. I'm not a huge fan of punk music so for the 'Mats to win me over says a lot about how great they are, just glad they're mix other genres into their music too. I can say without a doubt the greatest band from the 80's and up there as one of the best ever.

i dont really consider them punk, their first two albums maybe. but hootenanny is just to varied to be punk. and by let it be they were pretty much making 'grunge' music. neil young might be call the grandfather of grunge, but the replacements were probably the first grunge band, except they werent popular enough for a genre to be named after their style. it took nirvana and pj to do that.

if you pick up a copy of dont tell a soul, there is a little clip of the replacements playing monkey gone to heaven at the very end of the cd.

'if the pixies are 7, then the mats are 8'

dont get me wrong i like the pixies, but thats just so funny cause its true.
